The Splash Zone 5/31/18: Jesse Davis Earned Starting Position

Welcome to the Splash Zone, the quickest way to get your day started off right. We bring you a rundown of Miami Dolphins news from the last 24 hours.

NFL: Miami Dolphins at Buffalo Bills Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

Last year, Jesse Davis was a nobody and no one recognized his name on the Miami Dolphins roster. After spending the last few weeks of the 2016 on the Dolphins practice squad, Davis was a long shot to make the Dolphins final roster in 2017. Davis being named a starter is kind of a big deal as Adam Gase wants to keep the starters practicing together for the remainder of the offseason.

You can check out that story here, and the rest of the day’s round-up below.

Dolphins Defensive Line

Dolphins defensive line will change its approach under Kris Kocurek | The Daily Dolphin
DAVIE — Star defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh played an insane 84 percent of the Dolphins’ defensive snaps last season, and they don’t want to see anyone doing that this year.

Dolphins Davon Godchaux learned to be nasty in year with Ndamukong Suh | The Daily Dolphin
DAVIE — Davon Godchaux isn’t Ndamukong Suh, but he benefited from a one-year mentorship under the five-time Pro Bowler and gained a lot from watching him work on a daily basis. The Dolphins let Suh go this offseason and will proceed with Godchaux as a likely starter at defensive tackle.

Dolphins Linebackers

DAVIE — Jerome Baker has heard throughout his football career, including in the leadup to the NFL Draft, that he’s too small to be playing linebacker. The Dolphins didn’t agree with that when they took him, and Baker’s new teammates buy in as well.

Devastating news helps Frank Bush launch new career as Miami Dolphins assistant head coach | The Daily Dolphin
DAVIE — It’s possible that the best linebacker at the Dolphins’ training facility won’t make a single tackle this season, won’t break up a single pass and won’t be known to most fans. Frank Bush is 55 now. Coaches linebackers rather than lines up with them.

Dolphins Secondary

Early reviews on Dolphins S Minkah Fitzpatrick from position coaches | The Daily Dolphin
DAVIE — When the Dolphins took Minkah Fitzpatrick with the No. 10 overall pick this year, they described him as a player who was basically pro-ready because of his maturity level and the experience he got at Alabama. That has mostly proven true during his first month on the job.
