The Miami Dolphins victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars was one of the most baffling of the season. But was the victory over the inferior Jaguars discouraging or encouraging?

The Miami Dolphins beat the one-win Jacksonville Jaguars in Jacksonville last Sunday. It was a confusing game with a confusing result and, naturally, has many confused on how to feel about it.

On one hand, the Dolphins won a game that they were supposed to win against an underrated Jaguars team on the road. The team showed resilience in order to pick things up offensively after and abysmal half of football, and the defense carried the team until the offense got it together.

The team showed playmaking ability in key situations. Miami's defense showed the ability to tighten the screws when the opponent crosses the 50-yard line. The defense also showed the ability to force turnovers and mistakes and showed that they are an aggressive bunch (which actually hurt when the Jaguars ran misdirection plays).

On the other hand, the Dolphins did not show dominance. In fact, the team showed struggle outside of the four key plays that swayed the tide of the game. The Dolphins, yet again, showed how inconsistency is their calling card. The Dolphins, after dominating a talented Chicago Bears team in the Windy City, regressed their level of play to match that of their inferior opponent.

That inconsistency is very troubling. Possibly the most troubling takeaway from Sunday's game. If the Dolphins cannot become a more consistent team then the next four games, against opponents with a combined record of 22-9, will be a nightmare.

A blocked field goal by Olivier Vernon, a pick six by Louis Delmas, a pick six by Brent Grimes and a strip of Jaguars QB Blake Bortles by Jelani Jenkins were the plays that decided the game. Without those four plays, the Dolphins may have lost that game.

With what you've just read in mind, I ask you this-- was the Dolphins 27-13 win over the Jaguars encouraging or discouraging? Record your answer in the poll and feel free to comment any and all thoughts on this subject.

The Miami Dolphins beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-13 in an ugly game. It was exactly what the Dolphins needed.

The Miami Dolphins beat the Jacksonville Jaguars exactly how they needed to beat them on Sunday. Coming away with the 27-13 win in a game where the offense only scored one touchdown, is exactly the game the Dolphins needed at this point in the season. Why?

Good teams win games they shouldn't win.

The Dolphins have a lot to clean up after a sloppy, ugly game against their in-state rivals. The Jaguars are a better team, especially on defense, than a lot of people realize, give then team's 1-7 record, but the Dolphins made mistakes and could not get out of their own way early in the game.

Daryn Colledge started the game at left guard for Miami, but was dealing with a migraine headache. He allowed two sacks and a pressure on quarterback Ryan Tannehill before being pulled from the game. He played just 10 snaps.

Those two sacks effectively killed Miami's first two possessions, with the team going three-and-out both times. The Jaguars, meanwhile, started the game with a six-play, 50-yard drive, an 11-play, 46-yard drive, and a seven-play, 21-yard drive, all in the first quarter. Miami had -2 yards on their first two possessions, compared to the 96 yards for Jacksonville.

Yet, the end of the first quarter saw the score remain 0-0, and Miami started the second period with the first pick-six of the game, and suddenly they had a lead, a lead they would never give back.

The first half ended with Jacksonville owning a 226-yards to 46-yards of offense advantage. Miami had a 10-3 lead on the scoreboard.

The Dolphins came out in the second half and, while the offense was still struggling, they were able to start putting things together. After two drives of 4-plays and 3-plays, respectively, gaining a total of 11 yards, Miami suddenly went on a 7-play, 95-yard touchdown drive, then a 10-play, 63-yard drive before a tipped pass was intercepted in the endzone for a Jacksonville touchback, then a 9-play, 68-yard drive for a field goal. Add in a second pick-six, and the Dolphins were running away with a game where the offense could had only drive that gained over 10 yards through the first 39-minutes of the game.

Miami did not look like a good team on Sunday. The offense struggled to find rhythm, and could not pass block early. The defense allowed the Jaguars to chew through them up-and-down the field. They were lucky they were facing a team like the Jaguars, who are trying to develop a rookie quarterback, and not a team with an established superstar under center. But, at the end of the day, the defense stepped up to help the offense, and the offense worked through their struggles to find a way to win.

And good teams win games they should not. Good teams find ways to win on bad days.

The Miami Dolphins did that this past weekend. This week will be used to fix the issues, and, hopefully, they will be playing better football come next Sunday when they host the San Diego Chargers. But, at the end of the day, the Dolphins found a way to win, got the W.

Good teams win games they should lose. Miami should have lost that game, but they won.

The Dolphins are not yet a great team. They could be on the way to being a good team. And, winning a game like that is exactly what they needed.

Five observations, plus notes and quotes, on the Dolphins' baffling 27-13 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Miami Dolphins pulled out their fourth victory of the season Sunday with a 27-13 routing of the Jacksonville Jaguars. This game was one of the most confusing of the season. Although the Dolphins never trailed in this game, it took a look to the scoreboard at times to ensure that the Dolphins weren't getting pummeled.

This game can be defined by big plays made by the Dolphins defense to take advantage of mistakes made by the Jaguars offense. Here are five thoughts and a handful of notes & quotes on what transpired Sunday.

1. Dolphins start slow for fifth time this season

The Dolphins have started slow in every game this season besides games against the Oakland Raiders and Chicago Bears. The Dolphins went three-and-out on their first three possessions of the game. Miami didn't put a respectable drive together until the final minutes of the first half, the same drive where they picked up their first first down of the game.

The Jaguars dominated the first half of this game but the Dolphins were able to build a respectable lead because...

2. Dolphins make plays when it matters

A blocked field goal by Olivier Vernon, two interceptions returned for touchdowns from Louis Delmas and Brent Grimes and a forced fumble by Jelani Jenkins to end a promising Jaguars drive are the four defining plays of this game. As a result of these four plays, the score was 17-3 with 12 minutes left in the third quarter and the stat line was very misleading.

These plays allowed the Dolphins to not only overcome an abysmal first half offensively, but also have a lead after the offense failed to even get a first down until there was four minutes left in the first half.

The Dolphins defense was on the field for much of the first half and surrendered a ton of yardage to the Jaguars offense, but they still managed to make the plays that mattered. The defense propelled the Dolphins to victory on a day where the offense just wasn't in sync for much of the afternoon.

3. Dolphins offensive line got whooped

The Dolphins may have some upcoming shuffling to do as the offensive line was taken to school for much of the day against the Jaguars. Left guard Daryn Colledge was tossed aside multiple times before he eventually left the game with an apparent injury. The line seemed to play better after Colledge was sidelined. With guard Shelley Smith returning from injury soon, will Colledge get replaced after his bad game or will the coaching staff decide to stick with Colledge in the name of continuity? Will 2014 third round pick Billy Turner get a shot at the position? That will be an interesting development to watch this week.

Early in the game, the Jaguars were putting all sorts of pressure on Ryan Tannehill and controlling the line of scrimmage.

Despite the early struggles, the line eventually paved the way for 148 rushing yards on a 6.2 yards per carry average. Still, the trench-domination that the Dolphins endured was reminiscent of a game against the Buffalo Bills (which, by the way, is coming in three weeks). The Dolphins must be tougher in the offensive trenches for the up-coming stretch of tough schedule.

4. Dolphins must tighten up with tough stretch of schedule coming up

San Diego Chargers, Detroit Lions, Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos. Those are the Dolphins next four opponents. Because of this grueling stretch of schedule, the performance we saw Sunday needs to be improved upon.

If the Dolphins defense allows opposing offense to move down the field as easily as they allowed the Jaguars to move down the field in the next four weeks, then these up-coming games will get really ugly.

If the Dolphins offense goes three-and-out three straight times to start a game against one of the next four opponents or if the line continues to get dominated, then these up-coming games will get really ugly.

5. Very sloppy game, but Dolphins still above .500 on a two-game winning streak

On one hand you can argue that the Dolphins' struggles offensively against the Jaguars is a sign of their inconsistency and that they aren't a playoff team. But you can also argue that the defense picking up the slack on a day where the offense just isn't clicking is a metric that championship teams have.

That being said, consistency is needed from these Dolphins. Being able to start fast consistently, move the ball on offense efficiently and play with a greedy mindset on defense like they did Sunday is the next hurdle the team needs to leap in order to be taken seriously.

The performance that was shown Sunday won't get the job done against superior NFL teams. Both the offense and defense were subpar against a one-win Jacksonville team. The Dolphins played down to their opponents level, but made the plays that mattered to win the game.

That is a very discouraging and encouraging sentence at the same time, but there's no doubt the team's overall play needs to improve while keeping the greedy mindset intact. That being said, a win is a win and the team is now 4-3 on their first win streak of the season.

NOTES & QUOTES

- Denard Robinson became the first 100-yard rusher against the Dolphins with his 108 yards on 18 carries. Robinson and the Jaguars run game gashed the Dolphins for much of the first half with misdirection. Koa Misi's absence was clearly felt (again).

- Misleading stats: Jaguars outgained the Dolphins 377-326, Jaguars held the ball for 32:23 compared to Miami's 27:37, Jaguars outrushed the Dolphins 176-148, Jaguars two-for-two on fourth down efficiency.

- Non-misleading stats: Jaguars three turnovers to the Dolphins one (which came when the game had already been decided), Dolphins two defensive touchdowns to the Jaguars zero, Dolphins defense outscored the Jaguars offense.

- Players of the game: Olivier Vernon (blocked kick, put pressure on Blake Bortles all day), Louis Delmas (pick six, swatted a Bortles fumble away from a Jaguars receiver after the ball bounced straight to that receiver).

- With his 30-yard scamper late in the fourth, Ryan Tannehill became the first quarterback to have a run of at least 30 yards in three straight games.

- Ryan Tannehill and Mike Wallace hooked up on a deep pass down the sideline for 50 yards in the third quarter. It was the first deep connection between the two this year, and ironically enough the throw came while Tannehill was on the move. The connection inspired another deep try the very next play, which resulted in a familiar misfire between the too.

- Tannehill's interception was a bonehead play all-around. Of course we'd like to see a run that close to the goal line, but the call was a play-action pass. The play was covered nicely, but Tannehill decided to throw it anyway (decision-making). The pass was tipped and intercepted. While you may disagree with the play call, the pass shouldn't have been thrown. Tannehill should have cut the losses of the play instead of costing the team points.

- Brian Hartline, uncharacteristically, had three drops Sunday.

- Dolphins redzone defense was excellent. The Jaguars had seven drives ending on Miami's side of the field, yet scored only 13 points.

- Special teams was much better Sunday. The Dolphins blocked a kick and covered kicks excellently for the most part. The only negative was an offsides penalty on a field goal attempt which gave the Jaguars a short fourth down, which they converted.

- The Dolphins offense gained 270 yards in the second half Sunday to rebound nicely from an abysmal first half.

- "Offensively we have to play a lot better. We didn’t put those points up; the defense put those points us. We have to be able to go out and execute no matter who we’re playing. We didn’t perform up to our standards today in any aspect." - Ryan Tannehill

- "We knew up front they were going to do a really good job collapsing the pocket. They did a really good job in the first half. We came out in the second half and played better. But the way we played in the (first) half isn’t going to win too many games for us, so we’ve got to do a better job going into this week, starting in practice." - Mike Pouncey

- "Sometimes you have these games in the NFL where you feel like nothing goes our way. But our defense played so incredible today that they bailed us out of this one. We owe them one." - Pouncey

- "We played them last year; it was a tight game. We know what they bring to the table. We’ve just got to keep it rolling. We can’t underestimate anybody. One week at a time. I can’t wait for (Chargers quarterback) Philip Rivers to come into our town and we have a good game." - Olivier Vernon on next week's game.

The Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars have concluded their Week 8 showdown, with the Dolphins winning 27-13.

The Miami Dolphins beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-13 on Sunday, waking up in the second half to beat their in-state rivals after a slow first period.

The Jaguars opened the game marching the ball straight down the field on the Miami defense. Highlighted by a 41-yard run from Denard Robinson on a fake reverse, the Jaguars would quickly move 50 yards on just six plays, before having to line up for a field goal try. Dolphins defensive end Olivier Vernon was able to burst through the Jaguars' line and block the kick, however, with safety Michael Thomas recovering the kick.

Miami would go three-and-out after the blocked kick, killed by an illegal formation penalty and a sack of quarterback Ryan Tannehill by Ryan Davis. Davis was able to split the gap between left tackle Branden Albert and left guard Daryn Colledge, pulling down Tannehill four yards behind the line of scrimmage. Punter Brandon Fields, who has struggled in recent weeks, was able to connect solidly with the ball and kick it 49 yards.

The next drive for Jacksonville again moved the ball against the Miami offense, taking 11 plays to go 46 yards. Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles would pick up 44 of the yards through the air, getting Jacksonville into position for another field goal attempt. This time, the Jaguars would connect on the field goal, only to have a holding penalty back them up 10 yards and force the Jaguars to punt instead of trying to put the points back on the board.

The punt pinned Miami inside their own 10-yard line, only to have another Daryn Colledge allowed sack on first down push them back to the two yard line. Running back Lamar Miller was able to pick up the seven yards and get back to the original line of scrimmage, but Miami would again have to punt. Fields would kick the ball 50 yards on fourth down to give Jacksonville the ball at the Miami 49-yard line.

Bortles and the Jaguars offense again started to move the ball, picking apart Miami's defense both on the ground and through the air. The first quarter ended with Jacksonville at the Miami 28-yard line, and seeming able to do whatever they want.

The second quarter began with a Louis Delmas 81-yard pick six for a Miami 7-0 lead.

Jacksonville continued their abuse of the Miami defense on the next drive, but would again be held out of the endzone. After a 14 play, 66 yard drive that took over eight minutes off the clock, the Jaguars would have to settle for a field goal, actually getting to keep the three points on this one.

Another quick three-and-out from Miami was followed by a fumble from Bortles as he tried to run down the field. Delmas backed up his pick six with the recovery of the fumble.

Miami would put together their best possession of the game after the recovery. Tannehill would find Lamar Miller and Brian Hartline through the air, as well as Miller and Tannehill gaining ground with their legs, leading to an 11-play, 52-yard drive. Caleb Sturgis connected on a 43-yard field goal to extend Miami's lead to 10-3.

With 58 seconds remaining in the half, Jacksonville came out on 1st down and attempted a pass, only to have Cameron Wake sack Bortles for a three-yard loss. The Jaguars then ran out the clock and took the game to the halftime intermission.

The Dolphins took the opening kickoff of the second half, only to go three-and-out. After a 58-yard punt from Fields, the Jaguars took over possession at their own seven yard line. On the first play from scrimmage for Jacksonville, Bortles threw his second pick-six of the game, this time with cornerback Brent Grimes intercepting the pass and returning it for the score.

Jacksonville would again move the ball down the field after the Miami touchdown, a drive that was highlighted by a 32-yard scramble from Bortles. At the end of the 10-play, 58-yard drive, however, Jacksonville would again settle for a field goal, making it a 17-6 game.

After a 43-second three-and-out from Miami, the Jaguars would pick up a couple of first downs before having to punt the ball away as well.

Miami's defense showed up on the next drive, with Miller starting the drive for Miami with a four-yard run. after a one-yard loss from Miller, and a couple of offsetting penalties on third down, Tannehill looked deep to wide receiver Mike Wallace, connecting on a 50-yard pass down the right sideline. A couple of Miller runs, one for nine-yards and one for 30-yards, were then followed by a 3-yard touchdown pass from Tannehill to Rishard Matthews. Miami extended their lead to 24-6.

A three-and-out from Jacksonville was followed by a 10-play, 63-yard drive from Miami, where the team ate nearly 5:30 off the clock and methodically worked against the Jaguars defense. Passes to tight end Dion Sims, running back Daniel Thomas, wide receiver Brandon Gibson, and Wallace all assisted in Tannehill directing what appeared destined to be a scoring drive, only to have Tannehill's pass on 1st-and-goal from the Jacksonville five-yard line get dflected and intercepted.

The Jaguars' would not be able to do anything with the turnover, however, and would punt after one first down conversion.

The Dolphins would take the ball on the next drive, starting with a little over eight minutes remaining in the game, and start marching again. Miller would gain 19 yards on the drive, while Daniel Thomas would add 17 yards of his own. The big play came on a Tannehill pass, when he stepped up to avoid a sack, looked through his progressions, and found an open Dion Sims down the field for a 38-yard gain. The Dolphins would kick a field goal and extend the lead to 27-6.

Jacksonville would add a touchdown on their subsequent drive, with Bortles connecting on a 48-yard pass to Alan Robinson for the score. Defensive back Michael Thomas appeared to think he had safety help on the coverage, and handed Robinson off to no one, allowing him to get wide open and Bortles to make a beautiful connection.

Miami would recover the onside kick and run out the clock.

On the final drive, Tannehill would run for 30-yards on a 3rd-and-11 play to seal the win. The run gave Tannehill his third straight game with a 30+-yard run.

Tannehill ended the game 16-for-29 for 196 yards with a touchdown and an interception, giving him a 73.3 passer rating. Miller had 78 yard rushing on 14 carries, giving him a 5.6 yards per carry average. Wallace had just two receptions for 59 yards, with Sims adding two receptions for 51 yards. Cameron Wake, Reshad Jones, Jonathan Freeny, and Terrence Fede each had a sack, while Brent Grimes and Louis Delmas each recorded an interception, with both returned for touchdowns.

The Dolphins, now 4-3 on the season, face the San Diego Chargers in Miami next week. The Jaguars, who fall to 1-7, travel to face the Cincinnati Bengals.
