Miami Dolphins running back Knowshon Moreno will be out of action a little longer than initially expected as he rehabs a dislocated elbow, according to a report.

Miami Dolphins running back Knowshon Moreno suffered a dislocated elbow against the Buffalo Bills in Week 2 of the NFL season. Early estimates anticipated a four-week recovery time for Moreno, depending on the severity of the damage done in and around the joint. It appears, those estimates were too aggressive.

Moreno told the Palm Beach Post's Andrew Abramson today, "I probably got like four more weeks," Moreno said. "About four more weeks and I'll be good."

The initial estimate would have had Moreno returning as early as Week 6, Miami's next game after the bye week this coming weekend, in a showdown against the Green Bay Packers. If Moreno's estimate of four more weeks holds true, he would probably be able to return to the field in Week 9, when the Dolphins host the San Diego Chargers.

Starting running back Lamar Miller has stepped up his production since the injury to Moreno, including a 64 yard, 2 touchdown performance against the Oakland Raiders in London this past weekend. He has 277 yards and two touchdowns on the ground this year, along with 53 yards and a score through the air. His 5.7 yards per carry average is second in the NFL right now, behind Baltimore Ravens running back Justin Forsett and tied with San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Moreno is fourth in the league with 5.5 yards per carry.

Miami also re-signed Daniel Thomas, who they cut in the preseason, to bolster the depth of the running back position following Moreno's injury. Since returning to Miami, Thomas has seven carries for 50 yards, a 7.1 yards per carry average, along with two receptions for 46 yards. At this pace, Thomas could move to the top of the league's yards per carry average once he reaches the qualifying number of carries (6.25 carries per team game).

Behind Miller and Thomas, the Dolphins also have rookie running backs Damien Williams and Orleans Darkwa. Miami added former San Francisco 49ers running back LaMichael James to the practice squad this week.

The Miami Dolphins have re-signed Daniel Thomas after Knowshon Moreno's injury during the Buffalo Bills game.

The Miami Dolphins have re-signed running back Daniel Thomas, according to his agent, as reported by the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson. The move comes a day after running back Knowshon Moreno dislocated his elbow during the team's game against the Buffalo Bills.

Thomas was the team's second round draft pick in 2011. During his first three years in the league, Thomas has run for 1,312 yards on 365 carries with eight touchdowns. He also has 42 receptions for three touchdowns.

He was released during the final round of roster cuts in August. Thomas became expendable with the signing of Moreno this offseason, but is now a need signing as the team looks to add depth at a position that lost their leading rusher in Moreno and their starting carrier Lamar Miller against the Bills. Miller injured his ankle, though no prognosis on severity or length of any potential missed time has been made. Thomas already knows the Miami offense and will be able to quickly fit into the game plan as the Dolphins prepare to face the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend.

Moreno entered Sunday's game as the NFL's leading rusher, with 134 yards against the New England Patriots in Week 1 on 24 carries. He added one more attempt against the Patriots, gaining three yards. As he was tackled, he planted his left arm on the ground, only to have another tackler hit his elbow, bending it backward. He immediately left the game and was ruled out of any return to the contest, with reports later indicating the dislocated elbow. He is expected to undergo testing to discover the severity of the injury and judge how long he may be out.

The Dolphins will have to make an associated roster move to make space for Thomas. That move has not been announced.

[UPDATE:]

The Dolphins have placed Sammy Seamster on injured reserve to make roster space for Thomas.

Miami Dolphins running back Knowshon Moreno will likely miss multiple games after sustaining a dislocated elbow in today's contest with the Buffalo Bills.

The Miami Dolphins will likely be without the services of Knowshon Moreno for several weeks after the running back suffered a dislocated elbow against the Buffalo Bills Sunday. The injury came in the first quarter against the Dolphins' AFC East rivals, when Moreno was tackled after a short run. As he went to the ground, he braced his fall with his left arm, just as another Bills defender came in to assist on the tackle. The hit bent Moreno's elbow backwards.

Moreno entered the week as the leading rusher in the NFL, having put up 134 yards against the New England Patriots in Week 1.

The team has scheduled tests for Moreno's elbow once the club returns to Miami. Once those tests, to include an MRI, are completed, the exact amount of damage done to the joint will determine when Moreno will be able to return. Moreno being sidelined a month is expected, though it could be longer.

Miami plays the Kansas City Chiefs in Miami in Week 3 before heading to London to face the Oakland Raiders in Week 4. After a Week 5 bye, the Dolphins will host the Green Bay Packers.

Running back Lamar Miller was also injured during the game, leaving in the fourth quarter with an apparent ankle injury.

Miami Dolphins running back Knowshon Moreno has been injured in the team's game against the Buffalo Bills.

The first quarter injuries for the Miami Dolphins continue this week against the Buffalo Bills. After seeing linebackers Koa Misi and Dannell Ellerbe leave the game last week against the New England Patriots with first-quarter injuries, it now appears running back Knowshon Moreno may be joining that group this week.

Moreno ran the ball in the first quarter against the Bills, converting a first down on the carry. As he was tackled, however, his left elbow appeared to bend backwards as he was hit from behind. He immediately began rolling around on the ground holding his arm.

After trainers came on the field to check out the injury, Moreno walked off the field cradling his arm. He immediately went to the locker room.

Lamar Miller will replace Moreno, who has been officially ruled out of the game. Moreno entered the game as the NFL's leading rusher.
