My subjective look ahead at what’s in store for our Dolphins in the chilly climes of Orchard Park this Saturday night.

Week 14 was straight-up depressing. On paper, a 23-17 road loss to a talented team doesn’t look so bad. Any of us dedicated Dolphins fans know better, though. It remains to be confirmed, but I have a real fear that the code has been cracked on what had been a historically scary offense before these last two games on the Pacific Coast. Against an injury-ravaged Chargers defense, the vaunted Dolphins offense just never looked right, unable to fight through tight pass coverage (and a few awful calls by the refs). This dropped our team, once 8-3, down to 8-5 and in a real scrap for playoff positioning. It also handed me another “L” in the prediction game:

Things don’t get in any way easier for our Fins, with a short week to fly back to Miami late on Sunday night, figure out how in Hades to get their offense back on track, then fly up to the frigid realm of Buffalo for their second game against the Bills. The Dolphins managed a weird, hard-fought win over the Bills back in week 2 in South Beach, thanks to a gutsy performance by the defense and a brutal Miami climate that wilted half the Buffalo roster by the 4th quarter. This rematch has all sorts of implications, so let’s take a look at how the current version of the Fins and Bills stack up.

Stat-o-Matic

The key season stats for the two teams.

The numbers here should come as no great surprise. Despite looking more mortal in the past month or so, the Bills have maintained an excellent balance of offense and defense. Throw in a strong net turnover ratio and decent discipline in the penalty department, and it looks very much like the stat sheet of a very talented, experienced 10-3 squad charging hard for its third straight division title. The Dolphins aren’t that. Up to two weeks ago, they looked like a solid club with a potentially devastating offense. After scoring nearly at will against a string of weak defenses, they ran into a pair of teams that made some key adjustments that Mike McDaniel and the boys apparently were not prepared to counter. The defensive numbers for the Fins still aren’t great, despite the fact that the D has actually improved. The problem is that, even if you’re an improved defense, you’re going to have a hard time if your offense forces you to run out there for about 628 snaps every game while they crank out one 2-minute drive after another.

So the numbers don’t look great. Anything in Buffalo’s recent history on film that would inspire optimism?

Buffalo in Weeks 13 & 14: at New England and vs. NY Jets

Disclaimer: This is the point in writing this article where my regular work life went berserk and wore me out. The remaining sections are abbreviated from their usual form.

These two intra-divisional games bore more than a few similarities. Kind of ugly. Scores still close at halftime. Buffalo struggling against good NE and NY defenses to find the offensive rhythm that made them so terrifying earlier in the season. But ultimately the Bills’ offensive talent out-performed the Pats’ and Jets’ offensively-challenged squads, pulled away, and bagged two more wins. They didn’t come without cost, though. The Bills lost a few more key players to injuries, with Von Miller being the most crucial. The coming weeks will tell if the two-game lead they built in the division with these two wins will offset the losses of personnel.

Dolphins vs. Bills Unit Matchups

Dolphins Offense vs. Bills Defense: Three weeks ago, I would have looked favorably on this one. After the last two weeks, though? Not so much. The 49ers and Chargers both employed defensive strategies - namely, a lot more man-to-man and press coverage - that greatly limited what had up until then been a nigh-unstoppable Dolphins passing attack. I have to expect the Bills to try the exact same thing until Tua and the rest of the offense prove that they can counter it effectively. The Bills are missing some key defenders, but they’re still plenty talented and built to put a lot of pressure on the Fins’ pass catchers. Advantage: Bills.

Dolphins Defense vs. Bills Offense: As stated, the Bills offense has been a bit out of sorts lately. Maybe it’s been the elbow injury to Josh Allen a few weeks ago. Maybe injuries to a few offensive linemen. Or maybe it’s just the same malaise that we saw last season with both the Bills and Chiefs, where a sort of boredom over their own dominance made them a bit more vulnerable than normal. Whatever the case, the Fins’ defense has been impressive these past few weeks. The opponent scoring numbers might not suggest that, but I hang that on a Miami offense that’s left the D out to dry way too often, forcing them to stay on the field for 75 and 74 snaps in San Francisco and Los Angeles, respectively (by comparison, the offense took 42 and 47 snaps in those same games). I do think the Dolphins defense will prevent the Bills from doing too much damage and will acquit themselves well. However, the Bills still have too much proven talent for me to think that Miami has a leg up. Advantage: Bills.

Other Factors

Yes, the injuries are there for both teams; however, I think they almost even out. Yes, the Bills are now without Von Miller. That’s huge. But the Fins may be missing a few key guys, or at least have them out there playing hurt: Terron Armstead and Jeff Wilson (though it’s not like Wilson’s been getting a ton of run in recent games). For a mid-December game, these teams are about as healthy as one could expect.

The biggie is the weather. As I write this, several inches of snow have already fallen, with many more to come over the next several hours. In short, this does not favor the Dolphins in any way. This team has yet to show that it can play well in any sort of inclement weather, and snow generally wipes out any advantage that your speedy players give you. To succeed in these types of conditions, you need a strong running game, which the Dolphins absolutely do not have. On the plus side, the Fins are good at stopping the run, so this game could be another nasty, low-scoring affair where two or three “big” plays will be enough to get the win.

Prediction: Dolphins 13, Bills 23

I just can’t see a win here, as awesome as it would be. The Dolphins looked all sort of discombobulated last week, despite coming off a loss that just screamed for them to adjust and do something different. They didn’t, and they got embarrassed in primetime on national TV. Well, the conditions of this game are such that the options for adjustment are now extremely limited, and now is not the time to try out new strategies. I think we see our Dolphins skid to their second three-game losing streak of the season and basically drop out of the race for the AFC East division title.

Please tell me I’m wrong. Tell me that there’s hope. I just have trouble finding it against Buffalo this week. Fins Up!

The Miami Dolphins lost to the Buffalo Bills, with an embarrassing 19-0 final score. We take a look back at the game today with a look at the defensive snap counts for Miami.

The Dolphins could not do anything right this past Sunday, losing to the Buffalo Bills 19-0 in a game where the offense couldn't get started and the defense couldn't stop anyone. The loss took control of the final playoff spot from Miami and made it so they have to win in Week 17 against the New York Jets, as well as get some help elsewhere around the league, if they want to have a chance at January football.

Against the Bills, defensive ends Cameron Wake and Olivier Vernon started, along with defensive tackles Paul Soliai and Randy Starks. Of the four, Wake played the most snaps, 59 of the 79 defensive plays. Vernon appeared on the field 57 times, Starks 51 times, and Soliai had 44 snaps played. Coming off the bench, defensive tackle Jared Odrick actually played the most snaps this week of any defensive lineman, taking 63 plays, while defensive ends Derrick Shelby and Dion Jordan played 26 and 15 snaps, respectively.

Starting linebackers Dannell Ellerbe played every one of the 79 plays, while Philip Wheeler was on the field 74 times, and Koa Misi made 45 appearances. Jelani Jenkins added five snaps, Jason Trusnik appeared twice, and Austin Spitler was out on the field for the defense one time.

Brent Grimes and Nolan Carroll started at cornerback, a week after both of them had to miss the end of the game against the New England Patriots after being injured. Grimes took all 79 snaps Sunday, while Carroll missed one. Behind the starters, Jimmy Wilson, the Dolphins' primary nickel corner this season, played 33 times and Will Davis, who saw a huge jump in playing time against the Patriots after the Grimes and Carroll injuries, had one appearance against the Bills' offense.

Finally, the safeties continue to stay out on the field, with both Reshad Jones and Chris Clemons playing each one of the 79 plays.

The Miami Dolphins lost in embarrassing fashion on Sunday when they were shutout 19-0 by the Buffalo Bills. We take a brief look back at the game this morning through the offensive snap counts from the Dolphins.

The main thing of note on the offensive snap counts for the Miami Dolphins during their 19-0 loss to the Buffalo Bills is quarterback Ryan Tannehill's plays on Sunday. For the first time this season, Tannehill was unable to take every snap in the game, missing three after suffering a knee injury late in the game on the sixth sack allowed by the Dolphins. He did briefly return to the game, just long enough to get sacked a seventh time, before Matt Moore came back in for three more plays. On the day, Tannehill played 48-of-54 offensive snaps, while Moore took six snaps.

As usual, the majority of the offensive line were able to take every snap during the game, with guard Sam Brenner the only one to not complete the feat among the starters. Tackles Bryant McKinnie and Tyson Clabo, guard John Jerry, and center Mike Pouncey all played every one of the 54 plays. Brenner only made 19 appearances Sunday, with Nate Garner filling in on the other 35 snaps.

At wide receiver, Brian Hartline, Mike Wallace, and Rishard Matthews all started, along with tight end Charles Clay. Wallace and Clay played the most, making 52 appearances each, while Hartline played 51 snaps and Matthews appeared on 44 plays. Reserve tight ends Dion Sims and Michael Egnew played 11 and 3 snaps each, while wide receiver Marlon Moore came off the bench four times.

Lamar Miller started at running back, but only took 18 snaps, compared to reserve Daniel Thomas, who was on the field for 35 plays.

The Dolphins face the New York Jets, needing a win and some help to make the postseason this year. They will need a much better offensive output, running more than 54 plays in the game, if they want to come away with the victory.

The Miami Dolphins leave western New York yesterday having played an ugly game against the Buffalo Bills and failing to score a single point. The loss took the Dolphins' control of their playoff destiny, but did not end their chances for the postseason.

The Miami Dolphins simply were dominated on Sunday, losing 19-0 to the Buffalo Bills in a game that could have been much worse for Miami. The Dolphins could not run the ball, pass the ball, stop the run, or stop the pass during the contest, which usually signals a really bad day. Add in the seven sacks allowed, and, that's exactly what it was.

To put it another way, the Bills had three times as many first downs as the Dolphins (18-to-6).

Miami had more three-and-outs on the day than they had first downs (7-to-6). Add in a turnover-on-downs and an interception on third down during the team's final possession.

Or, the Bills had 3.8 times as many yards gained on the day as the Dolphins (390-to-103).

Miami averaged 1.98 yards per play during the game. The Bills dominated the Dolphins, sweeping the South Florida franchise, and putting a huge dent in the playoff chances for Miami. But, they did not completely kill them.

If Miami wins next week as they host the New York Jets, and either Baltimore loses or San Diego wins, the Dolphins will still make the post season tournament. A second straight loss would end any chance of January football for Miami.

There really is not a lot to say about this game. We can continue to look at the statistics, like Buffalo sacking Ryan Tannehill seven times on the day, setting a new Dolphins franchise record for sacks allowed in a season, now at 58 with a game to play. Tannehill missed his first snaps of the game after the sixth sack, appearing to injure his leg. He came back into the game on the next series, but was pulled after the seventh sack. Matt Moore made his first 2013 appearances because of the injury.

We can look at the 19-play, 9-minute drive by the Bills that chewed up the second-half clock at the end of the third-quarter and into the fourth. It may have only resulted in a field goal, but it was enough to keep the Dolphins offense off the field and wear out the Miami defense. That drive should have ended in a three-and-out, but an illegal hands to the face penalty on Philip Wheeler led to a first down, and Buffalo marched methodically down the field after that.

Miami's rush defense finally appeared to be finding its stride this year, having held the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, and New York Jets to under 100-yards rushing over the past three weeks. On Sunday, the Bills tallied 203-yards rushing.

There is not a single area of the game, except maybe the 10-punt average from Brandon Fields (50.1 yards per punt), where Miami outplayed the Bills.

Even the perfect streak from Joe Philbin on coach's challenges ended during the game. Philbin had been 6-for-6 when throwing the red flag on the field, but missed one yesterday when he challenged whether Robert Woods stepped out of bounds after making a 57-yard catch-and-run.

Nolan Carroll was able to pick off a pass from Buffalo's Thad Lewis during the game, keeping Miami as the only team in the league to have a takeaway in every game this season. Of course, Moore's two interceptions gave the Bills the win in the turnover margin as well.

The best part of this game was the end, when the teams walked off the field and the misery ended. Now, it's a matter of seeing how fast the Dolphins can put the putrid performance from Sunday behind them, and if they can get back the level of play that had them in control of their own playoff destiny before yesterday.

The Miami Dolphins were decimated today by the Buffalo Bills. Miami could not stop the Bills, whether it was on the ground or through the air. Nothing worked for the Dolphins on Sunday.

A chance to claim their first winning season since 2008. A chance to keep control of their playoff destiny. A chance to change the national story line about the team. A second shot at a practice squad quarterback who beat you earlier in the year.

It was all on the table for the Miami Dolphins. And it was miserably and embarrassingly all thrown away by the Dolphins as they collapsed for the second time this year against the Buffalo Bills.

The Bills simply came out and smacked the Dolphins in the mouth, and Miami had no answer. They couldn't stop the run, allowing 203 yards on 51 carries. They couldn't stop the pass, giving up 187 yards on 15 completions. They couldn't take advantage of a 13-yard punt. They couldn't take advantage of a Nolan Carroll interception.

They couldn't take advantage of a 50-yard pass from Matt Moore to Brian Hartline in the fourth quarter. Moore, who was in for an injured Ryan Tannehill, threw an interception on the next play.

Things were simply ugly throughout the entire game. And, the Bills pitched their first shutout at Ralph Wilson Stadium since 2006 - also against the Dolphins.

Miami had 103 yards of total offense during the game. That was a 1.98 yards per play average. They had six first downs the entire day. Miserable.

The Dolphins were flat today. No one seemed to have any real urgency in a game that, should the Dolphins have won, could have locked them into the playoffs, or at least made it so a win at home next weekend would guarantee a playoff berth. Instead, they are hoping for a lot of help around the league

This game was simply a miserable beat down of the Dolphins and their fans. Last week, Miami beat the New England Patriots for the first time since 2009 and looked like a team peaking at the right time of year. Seven days later, and there's not an area of the team, from coaching to execution - save the 50.1 yards per punt Brandon Fields tallied on his ten, yes 10, punts - that does not deserve blame from this debacle.

Now, Miami is hoping for a Baltimore Raven loss to the Patriots later this afternoon in order to keep any sort of playoff hopes alive. Even if the do, though, will this be the same Dolphins team that shows up next week against the New York Jets?

The Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills have completed the first quarter of their Week 16 matchup. The Bills currently lead 3-0.

The Buffalo Bills have a 3-0 lead over the Miami Dolphins after the first period in Orchard Park, New York.

The game has been fairly sloppy from both teams, with the weather not helping anyone. The freezing rain which, according to the forecast, was to hold off until near the end of the game, has already begun falling, and it's making the field slick.

The Bills punted on their first drive, a punt that traveled a grand total of 13 yards. However, they were able to move the ball on the second possession, including a 57-yard run-and-catch from Robert Woods. The Dolphins challenged that Woods stepped out of bounds after making the catch, but the call-on-the-field stood. Bills kicker Dan Carpenter conected on a 45-yard field goal to give Buffalo the 3-0 lead.

The Dolphins have not been able to get the offense clicking. They have three, three-and-outs on the day, with the other possession, Miami's second, saw the Dolphins pick up their only first down of the period, on a second-and-eight pass to Charles Clay. Miami then had a delay of game on third down, before giving up their second sack of the day.

That sack brought the Dolphins' sack allowed total to 53 on the year, tying the team's single season record. For the Bills, that was the 51st sack they have recorded, tying their franchise record.

The Bills currently have the ball and are driving again.
