The Miami Dolphins dropped a disappointing game this past weekend to the Buffalo Bills. In our final look back at the game, we take a look at the snap counts for Miami from the game, concluding this afternoon with the defense.

Earlier today, we took a look at the Miami Dolphins' offensive snap counts from their disappointing loss to the Buffalo Bills. While we are all getting ready to switch our attention to the New England Patriots coming up this weekend, we do need to take one last look back at the Bills game, this time with the defensive snap counts.

Four players took all 67 snaps for Miami this past weekend, safeties Chris Clemons and Reshad Jones, linebacker Philip Wheeler, and cornerback Brent Grimes. Jones has yet to miss a snap this year, while all four of them have played at least 93% of the snaps for the defense, with Grimes at 98% and Clemons, statistically, at 100%.

Along the defensive line, Olivier Vernon took the most snaps, with 49 played this week. After him, defensive tackles Randy Starks and Jared Odrick played 44 and 43 snaps, respectively. Then, starting defensive end Cameron Wake only played 21 of the 67 snaps, with the team clearly looking to bring him back slowly after nearly a month off from the game with a sprained MCL in his knee. Reserve defensive ends Derrick Shelby (41 snaps) and Dion Jordan (25) both saw their play time increase with the limited play from Wake. Paul Soliai, who started alongside Starks at defensive tackle, took 34 snaps, playing just over half the game. Also along the defensive line, Isaako Aaitui made his NFL debut, playing 19 snaps. Aaitui signed as an undrafted rookie with the Dolphins during the 2011 season, staying on the practice squad throughout the season, then was back with the team during training cap and the preseason in 2012 before being released, with the Dolphins intending to re-sign him to the practice squad before the New York Jets claimed him. However, he tore his ACL in his first practice with the Jets, losing the 2012 season. After spending this preseason with the New Orleans Saints, Aaitui was then signed to the Dolphins practice squad this year when Soliai got injured early in the season, and worked his way up to activated, and playing, this past Sunday.

Joining Wheeler at linebacker this week were Koa Misi (35 snaps), Jason Trusnik (36), and Jelani Jenkins (31). Trusnik got the start after middle linebacker Dannell Ellerbe was listed as inactive due to the shoulder injury he sustained during Miami's Week 5 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

At cornerback, Grimes was joined by Nolan Carroll, who held on to his starting position despite the availability of Dimitri Patterson this week. Carroll played 38 of the 67 snaps, while Patterson, who had not played since Week 1 as he rehabbed a groin injury, played 29 snaps. Jimmy Wilson continued to work as a cornerback as well, playing 33 snaps.

Just like with the offense, there were not any shocking surprises. Maybe a couple of things stand out, like exactly how limited Wake was, or that Jamar Taylor did not make a defensive appearance in the game (though he did play 10 special teams snaps).

Anything stand out to you?

The Miami Dolphins dropped a disappointing game this past weekend to the Buffalo Bills. In our final look back at the game, we take a look at the snap counts for Miami from the game, starting with the offense.

The Miami Dolphins lost a game they could have won this past weekend when they gave up a one point lead in the fourth quarter to the Buffalo Bills. While we all are getting ready to turn our attention to a second straight AFC East division rival this weekend when the Dolphins head north to face the New England Patriots, we do need to take one last look at the Bills game, tracking the snap counts for the Dolphins players. We start this morning with the offense, while the defense will be posted this afternoon.

As usual, six played took every offensive snap for the Dolphins: quarterback Ryan Tannehill, left tackle Jonathan Martin, left guard Richie Incognito, center Mike Pouncey, right guard John Jerry, and right tackle Tyson Clabo. With the trade for Bryant McKinnie this week, it looks like a much needed shakeup to the linemen is coming, so we will have to wait and see what happens to the playing time for someone like Clabo over the last 10 games this year.

Wide receiver Mike Wallace played all but two snaps this week, while Brian Hartline missed three snaps. Both receivers have now played at least 90% of the offensive snaps this year. Third receiver Brandon Gibson played 56% of the game this weekend, but had the biggest impact with his two touchdown receptions, the first two TD performance from a receiver since Marty Booker in 2006. Reserve receiver Rishard Matthews played just 13 snaps against the Bills.

Tight end Charles Clay took 54 of the 66 offensive snaps this week, catching one pass but making it count with a touchdown - his third straight game with a TD reception. Reserve tight ends Dion Sims and Michael Egnew both got credit for the start this week, as the Dolphins opened in a two tight end set, with Clay off the field. Sims played 23 snaps while Egnew took 14 on the day.

At running back, Daniel Thomas started the game and had his best statistical game of the year, with 12 carries for 60 yards over his 29 snaps. Lamar Miller, meanwhile, played 33 snaps, getting nine carries for 43 yards. Asked about Thomas starting, head coach Joe Philbin returned to his preseason mantra, basically stating that both Thomas and Miller are capable of being the starter, than Thomas may have been in first, but Miller took more snaps, and he pointed to the 12 to 9 ratio as basically an even number of carries. He still said Miller was the starter, but it happened to be that the first plays were a package for Thomas.

Nothing was overly surprising during the game, at least in terms of snap counts. Maybe the one thing that I was hoping to see, but it never happened, was Marcus Thigpen taking offensive snaps. At some point, hopefully, the return man will once again return to the offensive lineup and build on the six snaps he has this season.

How about you? Anything stand out?

The Miami Dolphins dropped to 3-3 on the 2013 season after a disappointing failure against the Buffalo Bills. Miami led late in the fourth quarter, only to give the game away and let Dan Carpenter kick the game winner in his former home stadium.

There is no way around it. Losing to the Buffalo Bills like that was disappointing. The Miami Dolphins have dropped three straight games after an excitement producing 3-0 start to the year.

I'll never fault the Dolphins for losing to a division rival in a close game, because if there is one thing that we should all know by now, it's that AFC East games are tough. No matter what the record, or what the situation, the Bills, Dolphins, New York Jets, and New England Patriots all play each other tough. The games are always closer than people think they will be, and there are several cases of the "worst" team in the division beating the "best."

However, yesterday was not the case of the Bills winning a game over the Dolphins. Yesterday was clearly a day of the Dolphins giving away a win.

There are a lot of people beating up on Tyson Clabo right now, and for most of the season, I agree with that. Yesterday, however, I can't fault him. He faced Mario Williams, who is third in the NFL in sacks with eight coming into this week. Through three-and-a-half quarters, Clabo shut down Williams. Unfortunately, he gave up two sacks, late in the game, with one leading to the fumble that cost the Dolphins the game. But, that does not change that for the vast majority of the game, Williams was a non-factor.

Where the fault lies is with the play calling. Why are the Dolphins, who were up by one point in the fourth quarter, passing the ball on 2nd and eight? Both sacks came on 2nd and eight plays, with the first coming after a two yard Brandon Gibson catch and the second, with the fumble, coming after a two yard Lama Miller run. In both cases, Miami should have been running the ball on second down to try to keep the clock running and burn some time. Instead, they took inexcusable sacks.

Throughout the week, I am sure we will look at the execution on both of those plays, and especially on Clabo, to try to lay blame at the offensive line's feet. But, in a game where the Dolphins averaged 4.8 yards per carry, with Daniel Thomas at 5.0 yards per carry and Lamar Miller at 4.8 yards per carry, the execution does not really matter. What matters is why the coaches were putting the team in that situation?

You know your offensive line has struggled to pass block all year. Through three quarters, that offensive line had not allowed a sack and were closing in on a really good day against a team that had 21 sacks prior to the contest. So, what do you do? You ask them to suddenly pass block some more, at a time where running the ball and killing the clock are the necessity.

After the game, head coach Joe Philbin explained, "There's always more than one option when it comes to doing things. We ran the ball on first down, we got two yards, making it second and eight, we believed we had a good play call, so we called the play. You can always - every time you pass the ball, you can run it, and when you run it, you can pass it."

Coach Philbin is correct. You can always second guess a play call, saying they should have run when they passed, or passed when they should have run. It's a great point for in the middle of the game. When it's late in the game, you have a one point lead, are averaging nearly five yards a carry, and it's second and eight, you run the ball. RUN THE BALL.

Say what you want about Clabo, or the whole offensive line, or Tannehill, or any of the Dolphins players. But, this was not them losing the game. This game was lost when the coaches decided that passing late in the game was the way to go after spending the entire game establishing the run. The coaches put the Dolphins in a position to fail - and they did.

Run the ball.

The Miami Dolphins lost to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday 23-21 with a last minute field goal from Dan Carpenter the difference. Miami is now 3-3 on the year, and on a three game losing streak.

The Miami Dolphins got off to a slow start against the Buffalo Bills today, having two interceptions and two punts on their first four drives of the game. But, the team spent those 17 plays establishing a previously unknown running game and, eventually, were able to put it together.

The team scored on a six-play, 62-yard drive at the beginning of the second quarter. While they would miss a field goal and also have two more three-and-outs, they would drive 75-yards in five-plays over 1:05 at the end of the first half, scoring touchdown number two on the day and bringing the Dolphins to within three at the break.

With the 17-14 lead, the Bills had an opportunity to extend that lead with the first possession of the third quarter, only to go three-and-out, giving the Dolphins the ball at their own 34 yard line. Eleven-plays and 66 yards later, Ryan Tannehill was finding Brandon Gibson in the endzone for the third TD pass from Tannehill and, second to Gibson, on the day.

The Bills would answer with former Dolphins kicker Dan Carpenter's second field goal of the day on the next drive, making the score 21-20 early in the fourth quarter.

Then is all fell apart for Miami. After the two sides traded punts, the Dolphins got the ball back with 3:39 left on the clock and a one point lead. Conventional wisdom says this game is over with a sustained drive, grinding the ball on the ground and letting the clock run. Instead, the Dolphins dropped back to pass, only to give up the strip sack to Mario Williams, allowing Kyle Williams to recover the ball on the Miami 34 with just over two minutes remaining.

Already in field goal range, the Bills did exactly what the Dolphins did not do, running the ball and wasting time. Eventually, they ran the clock all the way down to 33 seconds remaining as Carpenter connected on the 31-yard field goal to give Buffalo a 23-21 lead.

Marcus Thigpen was able to return the kickoff 44-yards, only to have Dan Carpenter trip him up enough to prevent the touchdown. Miami was unable to move the ball on the next three plays, and a fourth down Hail Mary with six seconds remaining fell to the turf.

Tannehill finished the game 19-for-37 for 194 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions, a 71.2 passer rating. Daniel Thomas led the way with 12 carries for 60 yards, while Lamar Miller had nine carries for 43 yards. Mike Wallace tallied five receptions for 76 yards, Brian Hartline had six catches for 69 yards, and Brandon Gibson recorded five receptions for 40 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Charles Clay added another touchdown on his only catch of the game.

The Dolphins are now 3-3 on the year, and have lost their last three games. They face the New England Patriots next week.

Use this thread as a live thread for the late afternoon games and as a place to vent after some questionable (at best) play calling on the second to last drive for Miami.

The Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills have completed the first quarter of play, with Buffalo leading

The Buffalo Bills have taken a __ lead over the Miami Dolphins after the first quarter. Miami has come out sloppy on the day, with an offense that cannot move the ball and a defense that is already backing up thanks to the Bills' power running game.

The Dolphins clearly are struggling in their first game since the bye week, and they have to wake up quickly to get back into a game that has featured Ryan Tannehill throwing a pick six on a really bad decision and a penalty on Don Jones for being the first person to touch the ball after running out of bounds on punt coverage. That penalty, a five yarder officially, resulted in a 40-yard difference between the two punts.

Miami has come out running the ball and trying to establish Daniel Thomas and Lamar Miller on the ground, as well as moving the pocket a little. However, they struggled early to get the ball moving.

Then, things started to click on a late quarter drive, as Miami both ran the ball well and passed effectively. Well, until the final play of the drive as Tannehill just lobbed a ball up into the air and had it intercepted on the one yard line.

The Bills have the ball at their own 15 yard line as the quarter ends.
