The Miami Dolphins beat the Cleveland Browns last Sunday. We take a look back at the game through the defensive snap counts for all 18 players who took at least one snap for the Miami defense.

It's a bit late, but it's something I have been trying to get formatted correctly, so here is, finally, our defensive snap count for the Miami Dolphins' 23-10 win over the Cleveland Browns from last week.

Earlier in the week, I posted the offensive snap counts, but the format did not work quite like I wanted. So, I pulled the defensive counts until I had a chance to make something new. Hopefully you will be able to read this version a little easier:

Nothing is really that surprising with the defensive snap counts this week. Nolan Carroll spent a little more time on the field than we probably would have thought when Dimitri Patterson had to miss some plays with the groin injury he is battling this week in practice. Only seeing Randy Starks for 48% of the game may be a little surprising, but when Paul Soliai dominated as well as he did, it's hard to justify pulling him for Starks.

I would expect to see Dion Jordan's snap counts slowly increase as the season continues. He also had 17 snaps on special teams.

What do you think? Anything stand out to you? Is this format better?

The Miami Dolphins beat the Cleveland Browns this past Sunday 23-10. Pro Football Focus takes a look back at the game, grading the performance of every member of the Dolphins.

As they do every week of the NFL season, the guys at Pro Football Focus have posted their grades for every player from every game for Week 1 of the 2013 season. That includes the Miami Dolphins' 23-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns. So, let's take a look at what the grades say for the Dolphins.

Three Postives:

Cameron Wake (+7.8) - Wake was PFF's top rated pass rusher last year, but is slacking off at number two after one season behind the St. Louis Rams' Robert Quinn (+8.2). Seriously, though, Wake once again dominated the game, constantly making his way into the Cleveland backfield. In their Re-Focus article about the game, PFF writes:

"For a moment, it looked like our top-rated 4-3 DE a season ago might start the season slowly when he missed a tackle on fifth offensive play of the game. Unfortunately for the Browns, that moment lasted just a single play as Cameron Wake stood up his blocker to force a cut on the very next play. From then on, whoever Cleveland put in front of him didn't stand a chance. The end tallied four stops in the run along with 10 QB disruptions (three sacks, two hits, and five hurries) in 44 snaps rushing the passer, en route to a monster +7.8 grade on the day."

Paul Soliai (+2.9) - I tweeted this during the game, but, simply put, Soliai is a beast. He had his way with the Browns' offensive line, shoving the center, guard, or center and guard back into the middle of the pocket on multiple plays, and he was a force in both the pass rush and run defense elements of the game. For a player the team seems to take out when the opponents are in passing situations, Soliai played well against the pass rush on the 32 times he attacked Brandon Weeden.

Brian Hartline (+2.7) - Is there any doubt that Hartline deserves to be on this list? He had his second best career receiving yardage day, with both of those coming against Ray Horton defenses. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill had a 113.4 passer rating when throwing to Hartline.

Three Negatives:

Tyson Clabo (-4.3) - This one surprised me a little. I have not gone back to watch the film yet, so maybe Clabo did have a performance worthy of a -4.3, with nearly the entire negative score coming from his run blocking. PFF pointed out several times when the Dolphins' right tackle got beaten to the edge, leading to either a tackle for a loss for the defensive end, or forcing the running back to try to cut back inside, where there were no running lanes.

Lamar Miller (-3.0) - No matter how bad Clabo or the rest of the offensive line were on Sunday, averaging just 0.3 yards per carry on 10 attempts is going to give you a negative grade. Add in a bad day pass blocking, and Miller's -3.0 makes sense.

Olivier Vernon (-2.6) - Vernon came away with one quarterback hit and three hurries, but still had a negative grade from PFF on pass rush as well as run defense. On a day which featured the Dolphins dominating the Browns offensive line with a pass rush that resulted in six sacks and 16 quarterback hits, Vernon did not record a tackle and only had the one hit. After a good preseason, Vernon needs to keep up the pressure on the opposing quarterback.

The Miami Dolphins beat the Cleveland Browns on Sunday 23-10. Following the victory, we take a look at the Dolphins’ stock ratings.

The Miami Dolphins came away victorious in their Week 1 contest against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. With the 23-10 scoreline looking good, especially with in the win column, several players stood out on the day, and not always for good reasons. Let's take a look at whose stock rose Sunday, and whose fell.

Stock Up: Dimitri Patterson - Before training camp started, I was predicting Patterson would be cut, based on his high salary cap number and the likelihood he would not be starting, and possibly not even among the first level of reserves. All Patterson has done since then is make me eat my words. He didn't just claim a roster spot, he took over the starting role, leading to Richard Marshall being cut. Then, going up against his former team on opening weekend, he picked off two passes. Patterson is the real deal as the number two cornerback for the Dolphins.

Stock Down: Lamar Miller - Some of this is the offensive line, which we will discuss in a minute, but Miller definitely did not look like a player able to serve as a starting running back. He was indecisive and was brought down behind the line of scrimmage too often, including a stretch where he was brought down for minus two yards three runs in a row. The line struggled to open up running lanes, but Miller just looked overwhelmed in his first start.

Stock Up: Brian Hartline - Something about Ray Horton defenses agree with Hartline. Last year, he went off to 253 yards and a touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals, where Horton was the defensive coordinator. On Sunday, he had 114 yards and a touchdown. As teams continue to utilize the Browns' plan to cloud Mike Wallace no matter where he is on the field, Hartline should see more opportunities for days like Sunday.

Stock Down: Offensive line - There's no doubt that the offensive line did not play well throughout the game. The Browns have a good front seven, but there was simply no running room Sunday, and running the ball should be the strength of this offensive line. The line did get better as the game went along in pass protection, but it's still an area they have to improve if they are going to succeed this season.

Stock Up: Ryan Tannehill - Even with the offensive line allowing way more pressure than they should have, Tannehill worked through his progressions and put the ball where it should have gone on most plays. A couple of overthrows or a ball that was tipped and intercepted don't take away from the fact that Tannehill actually looked poised and decisive on Sunday. It was not a perfect day, but Tannehill definitely looked the part against the Browns.

Stock Down: Mike Wallace - Wallace's stock isn't down because of a one catch, 15 yard performance. It's not down because he was frustrated because of that performance. It's because Wallace chose to display that frustration publically and seemed to throw the coaching staff under the bus in doing so. Today, he came out and said he was upset with himself, not the coaches, but whatever the case, turning into diva-receiver after one game - especially a game the team won - is a little dramatic. This story was overblown, but putting himself into that position in the first place was unnecessary.

With the Miami Dolphins’ 23-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, there are several things we learned about this Dolphins team early in the season.

No matter the outcome in an early season game, there are always going to be things the team learns about themselves and things the fans learn about their favorite team. That's true about the Miami Dolphins this week, who opened the season with a 23-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns yesterday. What did we learn? Let's take a look.

1. Ballhawking is the name of the game. We heard all offseason that the team was focused on forcing turnovers. Talk is great, but how would the team respond once the games actually counted? Three interceptions later, it seems like the coaches did the right work to pull off the switch in turnover differential. The team nearly had a fourth pick, if Reshad Jones had been able to hold on to a ball that magically bounced to his feet. The Dolphins are clearly going after balls on deflections and tipped passes, something we did not see them do with such effort last year. This defense wants that ball. They need that ball.

2. Offensive line is still figuring it out. The offensive line clearly struggled at times on Saunday, allowing sacks or pressures too often. A huge part of that is how impressive the Browns' front seven were during this game. They were able to simply shut down any attempt to run the ball by the Dolphins, and, without any semblance of a rushing threat, were able to pin their ears back and get after Ryan Tannehill. The line has to get better, but they will as they get more experience playing together.

3. Ryan Tannehill is clearly more comfortable. Is there any doubt after that game that Tannehill is more comfortable in this offense than he was last year? Tannehill was decisive with where to put the ball, and he made the right decisions. There were a few cases of him trying to force the ball into a space, especially when it came to Mike Wallace in the second half, or an overthrow or two, but overall, Tannehill was making his reads, progressing through his receivers, and throwing to the correct receiver. This isn't to say Tannehill will have a season of epic proportions, but he definitely looked more comfortable making decisions on Sunday.

On a side note - the pass rush is not mentioned because, as Dolphins fans, we didn't learn about that on Sunday. That was a known commodity - although maybe not to that degree

The Miami Dolphins beat the Cleveland Browns yesterday, coming away with the 23-10 victory and starting the season 1-0. From the post game reaction of wide receiver Mike Wallace, you wouldn't have guessed the Dolphins were on the right side of the score line.

It took one game for Miami Dolphins wide receiver Mike Wallace to go from prized acquisition of the offseason to moody diva upset over not getting the ball enough. On a day that saw the Dolphins beat the Cleveland Browns, with Brian Hartline pulling in nine passes for 114 yards and a touchdown and Brandon Gibson adding seven receptions for 77 yards, Wallace's one catch for 15 yards stuck out at the end of Sunday's game.

And, Wallace was clearly aware of the disparity.

Ask Coach. It's not my game plan.
-Wide receiver Mike Wallace on not getting targeted much dring the team's 23-10 win over the Cleveland Browns, 9/8/13

"I don't want to talk. I don't feel like talking about it," Wallace told Miami Herald reporters as they approached him after the game. When asked why he was not involved much in the first half, and if it was a deliberate decision to target him early in the second half, the former Pittsburgh Steelers receiver added, "Ask Coach. It's not my game plan."

As the team celebrated the win, Wallace spent time with General Manager Jeff Ireland, clearly bothered by the lack of production. Part of the reason Miami signed Wallace this free agency period was for the attention he would draw, freeing up other receivers. That's exactly what he did Sunday.

"It's frustrating for Mike," quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who finished 24-for-38 for 272 yards and the Hartline touchdown, explained in his post game remarks. He then referenced his time at Texas A&M as a receiver. "I've been there, playing receiver back in the day, when they take you away. It's frustrating. But, by them taking him away, it really opened up Gibson, Hartline, and even [Charles] Clay, so frustrating for Mike, but at the same time, it opened up some other things for us."

Clay recorded five receptions for 54 yards Sunday.

"I thought the ball went to the right place the vast majority of the time based on the coverages that we got," Head Coach Joe Philbin explained during his media availability.

"We're going to get him the ball," Tannehill added about the future for Wallace. "They did a good job of taking him away, but we're going to find ways to get him the ball.

"I think they did a lot of things to take him away. They clouded him and put a guy over the top. It's frustrating for him and our offense, as well. We want to give him the ball, and he's going to play a big factor in this offense the rest of the year. Today just wasn't the day for him."

Hopefully, by the time the plane landed in Miami, Wallace was ready to put Sunday behind him and move on to the next day. This will be talked about in the media all week, but it's a matter of keeping it there, and not on the practice field this week, because when the receptions do start to come, Wallace will be a major part of the Miami offensive success this season.

The Miami Dolphins beat the Cleveland Browns 23-10 yesterday, moving to 1-0 on the season before next week's contest against the Indianapolis Colts. We take a look back at yesterday's contest this morning.

It wasn't always pretty, but the Miami Dolphins left Ohio yesterday with a 23-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns. The win puts the Dolphins at 1-0 on the season, and extends Cleveland's streak of Week 1 losses to nine straight years.

The Dolphins were only able to score two field goals in a first half that they dominated, including three interceptions and a time of possession of 17-1/2 minutes to 12-1/2. The Browns put their only first half points on the board following an interceptions of a Ryan Tannehill pass that was tipped. The interception is the first for Tannehill this year, having not thrown any in the preseason. The Browns would go 59 yards after the pick in 11 plays, finding the endzone on a Jordan Cameron reception from Brandon Weeden.

Miami came out aggressive in the second half, attacking the Browns on both offense and defense. Miami would find the endzone twice in the half, first on a third quarter, 34-yard pass from Tannehill to Brian Hartline, then on a fourth quarter, one-yard run from Daniel Thomas.

Caleb Sturgis completed his three-for-three day with a 36 yard field goal late in the fourth period. He connected from 45-yards and 49-yards in the first half. The rookie scored 11 total points on the day.

The Dolphins defense clearly was the class of the game Sunday, recording the three interceptions, six sacks, 16 quarterback hits, and 10 passes defensed. Cameron Wake recorded 2.5 sacks, with Randy Starks coming away with 1.5 and both Derrick Shelby and Dion Jordan tallying one each. Nolan Carroll made the first interception on the day, snagging a deep ball from Weeden at the Miami one yard line. DImitri Patterson then backed that up with two interceptions of his own.

Linebackers Philip Wheeler and Dennell Ellerbe and safety Reshad Jones all lead the team with six tackles apiece.

The weak part of the game was clearly the Dolphins offensive line, which struggled to protect Tannehill throughout the game, and could absolutely not move the Browns defensive line to open up running lanes. The Dolphins averaged an embarrassing 0.9 yards per carry on the day. The Browns have a very impressive front seven, designed to swallow up ball carriers, and that's exactly what they did yesterday.

The offensive line allowed the Browns to sack Tannehill four times, along with seven quarterback hits. While it clearly was not the pressure Weeden felt from Cameron Wake, et al, during the game, the line has to shore up the protection of Tannehill. Every offensive lineman seemed to have trouble at different times during the game, leading to the pressure.

However, they seemed to go through spans where the pass protection got better, and the second half was a lot better than the first. The line simply could be going through the growing pains of a new line, trying to work together, early in the season. Whatever the case, they have to find the answer fast - both in pass protection and in opening up rushing lanes.

The Dolphins came away with the win, which is clearly the most important part of the game. The team now turns its focus to the Indianapolis Colts, traveling north to face another 2012 Draft Class quarterback, this time in first overall pick Andrew Luck. That game is next Sunday at 1pm ET on CBS.
