We have been remiss in getting the defensive snap counts for the Miami Dolphins over the first two weeks of the season. The Dolphins lost to the Seattle Seahawks on a last minute touchdown in Week 1, the only touchdown they allowed in the game but one that cost them a “W.” Last week, the team again lost, this time coming up a touchdown short of an amazing comeback against the New England Patriots.

Today, we take a quick look back at both games through the snap counts of the defensive players.

The Miami Dolphins offense struggled to get started on Sunday against the New England Patriots but found their groove in the second half of the contest. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill finished the game 32-for-45 for 389 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He was also the leading rusher in the game for the Dolphins, picking up 35 yards on six carries. The Dolphins had two receivers go over 100 yards against the Patriots, with Jarvis Landry leading the way with 137 yards on 10 receptions and DeVante Parker adding 106 yards of his own on eight receptions.

Miami needs to find a way to start faster in their games, but the offense seems to be starting to come together. As we do every week after the Dolphins’ game, we take a look at the number of plays in which each player participated during the contest.

Here are the offensive snap counts for Miami in Week 2:

The Miami Dolphins dropped their second straight game to start the 2016 NFL season, losing to the New England Patriots on Sunday 31-24. The team rallied back from a 31-3 deficit to close to within a touchdown of the Patriots, then drove down the field to have the final pass from Ryan Tannehill into the endzone with a chance to tie the game. Unfortunately, the pass was intercepted rather than completed and the Dolphins fell to 0-2 on the season.

Looking back on the game, it was an ugly first half followed by an offense that awakened in the second half, but a defense that could not get stops when it needed them. We take a look at the good, the bad, and the ugly for the Dolphins against the Patriots.

We are going to do something a little different this week. We are not going to limit any category to just one entry, but rather allow multiple players/events to take a spot on the list.

The Good.

Ryan Tannehill - A lot of people are complaining that Tannehill only puts up his numbers in “garbage time.” Unless the Patriots’ defense was allowing Miami to climb to within a reception of tying the game, this really was not a “garbage time” situation. Was the game out of reach at 31-24? It was not garbage time. There is also a complaint that the Dolphins only came back because they were playing against a third-string quarterback. Unless Jacoby Brissett was doing something to change Tannehill’s play, I do not believe his presence in the game had any impact on the offense. Tannehill and all of the offense struggled in the first half, but they found themselves in the second half and got after it. Miami’s quarterback appeared to be in charge of the offense and put the team on his shoulders to try to come back in the second half. He finished the game 32-for-45 for 389 yards with two touchdowns, two interceptions, and a 93.7 passer rating.

Jarvis Landry / DeVante Parker - Like Tannehill, the two receivers came on strong in the second half and put up some really nice numbers. Landry caught 10 passes for 137 yards while Parker had 8 receptions for 106 yards. It was a good sign that the Dolphins offense finally had two receivers working in the offense. Now, they just need them to do it in the first half.

Jordan Cameron - Admit it, Jordan Cameron’s game surprised you. He caught five passes for 49 yards with a touchdown. Yes, he dropped a pass early in the game, but somewhere he found his hands for the first time this year and he started catching the ball. Maybe it was the fact that Tannehill was throwing the ball hard enough to make it stick inside someone, but whatever the case, Cameron had a good game.

Pass blocking - The offensive line allowed no sacks on Sunday, after allowing five against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1. That is worthy of a “good” mention.

The Bad.

Arian Foster’s injury - It did not take long for the injury bug to bite Foster this year. He is “day-to-day” right now with a groin injury, one that had him take an MRI Monday morning. It is not a good sign that Foster is already ailing. Will the team be able to find the “next-man-up” in Jay Ajayi, Kenyan Drake, Damien Williams, or Isaiah Pead?

Run blocking - When Ryan Tannehill is the leading rusher by over 20 yards, it is not a good day for the run blocking. Yes, the injury to Foster was a part of that and the team needing to throw so much being down big so quickly was another part, but the run blocking just was not up to the same level as the pass blocking on Sunday.

Kick/Punt returners - It was not a good day for the returners for the Dolphins. Jarvis Landry did not catch a punt return cleanly. Jakeem Grant did not catch a kick return cleanly. Damien Williams took a kick out of the endzone from five yards deep and slipped at the 10-yard line. It was not the best day for the returners.

The Ugly

The defense - I do not know that the entire defense was ugly, especially Ndamukong Suh who recorded 12 tackles and was a force, though the team kept having to take him out of the game to rest because the defense was playing too much in the first half, but it sure felt like all of it was ugly. The cornerbacks played too far off the ball, allowing way too many short passes. The Patriots ran the ball outside when Suh was on the field and Miami could not stop it. The Patriots ran the ball up the middle when Suh was off the field, and Miami still could not stop it. The Dolphins allowed Jimmy Garoppolo to look like a future Hall of Fame quarterback, throwing for 234 yards and three touchdows in less than a half a game, then could not find a way to stop the Patriots offense when it was being helmed by a third-round rookie quarterback who clearly was using a limited playbook (Jacoby Brissett was 6-for-9 for 92 yards). LeGarrette Blount rans for 123 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries. Michael Thomas and Jason Jones did both have sacks, but where were Mario Williams, Cameron Wake, and Andre Branch?

The Miami Dolphins lost to the New England Patriots 31-24 on Sunday, despite a second-half charge that came up two-yards short.

The Miami Dolphins were embarrassed in the first half of their game against the New England Patriots earlier today, then hit the reset button at halftime and almost made the improbable comeback. It was an impressive performance from the offense in the second half, making their way back into the game, but they were let down by a defense that could not make a stop when it mattered the most.

Before the season, looking at the Dolphins’ schedule, an 0-2 start seemed definite. Then Tom Brady was suspended and it appeared that the Dolphins could steal a win against the Patriots. Now, after two weeks, the Dolphins are 0-2 and just about exactly what we thought they would be before the opening kickoff in Week 1.

The problem is, that does not make any of this feel better.

This stings, and it probably will for a while. They were one minute away from beating the Seahawks. They were two yards away from tying the Patriots. And, both of those games ended with Miami putting a number in the loss column. That hurts.

Personally, I am absolutely spent after being miserable for the first 30 minutes, then slowly building up as the Dolphins began mounting a comeback, to an incredibly tense final drive, only to see it collapse away. It was great. It was horrible. It was football.

And it stings.

This is another week of trying to put a Dolphins loss behind us. It’s another week where we are trying to find answers to questions that seem to continue to surround the team. It’s another week of not knowing what exactly we have in Ryan Tannehill, Kenny Stills, DeVante Parker, Jordan Cameron, Jay Ajayi, Xavien Howard, Byron Maxwell, etc., etc. It’s another week of trying to solve the riddle that is being a Dolphins fan.

This stings, and it probably will for a while. Miami had the Patriots on the ropes, and they could not stop them from running the ball right down the field and killing the clock. They had a third-string, rookie quarterback on the field, and the defense could not rattle him.

There can be hope from what we saw this week, but there are a lot of clouds blocking it right now. The Dolphins have to figure out a way to get the offense moving earlier in games and the defense needs to finally show up.

Because this stings right now and, if they don’t solve these issues, it might sting a lot more over the next 15 weeks.

The Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots took the field in their Week 2 contest this afternoon, with the Patriots coming away with the win. As we do every week, we kept track of our thoughts throughout the game as it happened, running through the plays and reactions from throughout the game.

Final Score

Patriots 31-24

First Half

Patriots getting the ball first.

That was bad. Just....bad.

3rd down, pass to Jordan Cameron. Can’t make the catch. Anyone surprised? Dolphins punting.

Byron Maxwell continuing to give a huge cushion, the Patriots keep going with the short, quick passes. Something had to change.

Jimmy Garropolo is 7-for-7. Need the pass rush to show up.

8-for-8. 7-11 is always open.

Dolphins still cannot figure out how to stop the Patriots. No one is covering receivers anywhere on the field.

Kiko Alonso with the almost sack. Does that count as a good play?

Oh, holding on the almost sack. Now 1st-and-20 for New England.

End of the first quarter. Thankfully.

The defense looks miserable. There is no life in them and they seem ready to quit.

Touchdown. Garoppolo to Amendola. Patriots 21-0.

Kenyan Drake back for the kickoff return. Brings it out from 5-yards deep. Gets to the 10 yard line. A touchback would have started the team at the 25.

Did the Dolphins just try to go deep on a 3rd-and-5, throwing to Jordan Cameron? Bet you can’t guess the result.

Punt.

Wow. The Patriots are punting. Is this allowed? Of course, it took a Garoppolo overthrow to make it happen.

Tannehill to DeVante Parker deep. Parker gets it in his hands....and it is jarred loose on the hit.

Jay Ajayi getting the carry.

Cameron Wake with the sack....just kidding. Xavien Howard illegal hands to the face and the Patriots get a 1st down on 3rd down.

FUMBLE! Kiko Alonso with the recovery after Amendola reception and Bobby McCain strip.

Fumble. Jarvis Landry tries to pick up extra yards, and gets stripped. Chris Long with the recovery.

Arian Foster questionable to return with a groin injury.

Kiko Alonso hist Garoppolo just as he throws the ball and Garoppolo lands on his throwing shoulder. Appears to be in a lot of pain. Jacoby Brissett warming up.

Field goal. Patriots extend lead to 24-0.

Jay Ajayi coming out looking good on this drive. Picking up yards on the ground and in the air. With Foster injury, this is Ajayi’s chance to re-gain the coaches’ confidence.

Interception. Tannehill had pressure up the middle, tried to get rid of it and instead throws the pick.

Dolphins suddenly moving the ball.

Nice catch by Dion Sims.

Immediate Reactions

What a comeback from the Dolphins. After a first half that was simply miserable, the team somehow battled back. Yes, the loss of Garoppolo for the Patriots changed the game, but the Dolphins offense kept battling and somehow made this a game. Ryan Tannehill finished the game 32-for-45 for 389 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. That last pick dropped him to a 93.7 passer rating, but he looked really, really good in that second half. Basically, the team has to find their rhythm on offense a lot earlier, and the defense has to be able to stop the run if they are going to improve over the next 14 games. Great comeback, and a lot more interesting game than it looked like at halftime. It’s still a loss, but at least it was not 31-3 or something.

The Miami Dolphins continue their 2016 season with a Week 2 visit to the New England Patriots. Here's everything you need to watch the game, and your chance to join our live, in-game chat. If you want to join in the discussion, including during our live thread for the game, make sure you sign up for your free SB Nation account.

The Miami Dolphins head into the second week of the 2016 NFL season with their first scheduled AFC East battle on the calendar, a visit to the New England Patriots. Miami is looking to improve to 1-1 on the year, while bringing New England, the only team in the division to win last week, back to an identical 1-1 record. The Dolphins are, like last week, underdogs looking to pull off the upset on the road.

The Dolphins will be facing a Patriots squad missing several key played like quarterback Tom Brady and tight end Rob Gronkowski. Brady is serving the second game in a four-game suspension while Gronkowski has been dealing with a hamstring issue to start the season. Of course, both players also missed last week, and the Patriots won, so Miami will still have to play up to their full potential to keep up with New England.

The Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots are preparing for their first meeting this season, facing off in the Foxboro half of the home-and-home series between the two AFC East division rivals. Both teams have released their inactive players lists for the game, which we have below.

Under NFL rules, both teams must declare seven players inactive before the game, allowing them to only carry 46 players into the game.

For the Dolphins, the seven inactive players are wide receiver Justin Hunter, linebacker Donald Butler, safety Jordan Lucas, center Mike Pouncey, offensive lineman Dallas Thomas, running back Isaiah Pead, and running back Damien Williams.

That means running back Jay Ajayi, wide receiver DeVante Parker, and defensive end Mario Williams are all available to play in the game.

New England’s inactive list includes tight end Rob Gronkowski, linebacker Dont’a Hightower, tight end A.J. Derby, defensive back Eric Rowe, guard Jonathan Cooper, offensive lineman LaAdrian Waddle, and defensive lineman Anthony Johnson.
