NFL: Combine Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

The Phinsider Mock Draft Database returns today to take the first look around the web after the first major portions of free agency. As mock drafts are updated, we start to see the picks of all 32 NFL teams shift, both with needs from the teams changing, as well as some changes following the NFL Scouting Combine and the first wave of Pro Days are completed. All across the web, projections of the first round are starting to reflect these updates, which means we will likely see a large change in the Miami Dolphins’ first round pick this week.

The mock draft database also expands to 56 included predictions this week, with more mock drafts starting to be published in the sis weeks remaining before the actual 2017 NFL Draft.

As we have each of the last five editions, we collect the first-round selection of the Miami Dolphins from around the web in the various mock drafts being posted. We list them all below, as well as collect the picks to see who is the top projected selection for the Dolphins. You will also find the previous most popular pick for each of the past database updates located on the side of this article. So far, O.J. Howard, the Alabama tight end, has been the top projected pick, either alone or tied, every week.

The last update to the database paired Howard with Miami tight end David Njoku as the top projected picks at 10 percent each, though defensive end was the most selected position last update with 30 percent of the projections.

This week, that large change does happen, with Howard falling to 5.5 percent of the selection. Njoku rises slightly to 10.9 percent of the selections, but falls to the second most selected pick. This update swings Miami’s most popular player pick from a tight end inside to a guard, with Western Kentucky’s Forrest Lamp projected in 14.5 percent of the selections.

Following Njoku’s 10.9 percent of selections is Haason Reddick, Temple defensive end, and Jabrill Peppers, Michigan safety/linebacker, who both show up in 9.1 percent of the first-round mock drafts. Rounding out the top five selections is UCLA defensive end Takkarist McKinley, who is picked in 7.3 percent of the projections.

Switching over to the position breakdown, defensive end remains the most selected position for Miami, with 34.5 percent of the mocks going that route. A distant second is tight end at 16.4 percent. Guard is third, entirely made up of the Lamp projections, at 14.5 percent, while cornerback comes in at 12.7 percent and safety has 10.9 percent of the selections.

The tight end selections may continue to fall over the next few editions of the database as mock drafts are added or updated and people consider Miami’s trade for Julius Thomas and signing of Anthony Fasano. Interestingly, however, is the fact that some of the mock drafts out there switched to a tight end - and specifically Njoku - despite the two additions at the position. Some of those projections seem to think Miami could still be looking to add a dynamic young tight end, while some think Miami may just be forced to select Njoku simply because he is the best player on the board and they cannot afford to pass up the talent and value he would represent.
