The Miami Dolphins received good news and bad news in their search for a starting right guard on Wednesday. The bad news comes in the form of an injury to Nate Garner. According to NFL Network's Jeff Darlington, Garner is out indefinitely with a shoulder injury.
It had appeared Garner was the newest front runner to claim the position after second year lineman Josh Samuda had a bad game against the Jacksonville Jaguars last Friday. Garner has been the Dolphins' utility reserve the past few years, playing everywhere along the offensive line except center. Even if Garner did not win the right guard position, any major injury to him could hurt the Dolphins during the season.
The Dolphins continued their standard policy of not discussing injuries.
The good news, however, was the return of John Jerry to practice. Jerry, who held the right guard position last year, had been sidelined since the first week of training camp with a knee injury. He reportedly had his knee scoped, and has been rehabbing it ever since. On Wednesday, he warmed up with the team and took part in individual drills. However, when the practice transitioned to team drills, Jerry stood on the sideline before returning to the training facility for treatment and rehab work.
The Dolphins will likely bring Jerry along slowly, not wanting to risk further injury to the man most likely to start at right guard this year.
The position is not completely his, however, as free agent signing Lance Louis, who was brought to Miami to push for Jerry for the position, is also seeing his playing time and reps begin to increase following weeks of rehab work. Louis tore his ACL late last season when he was with the Chicago Bears.
