The Miami Dolphins have announced roster moves today, with starting cornerback Dimitri Patterson and cornerback/special teams player R.J. Stanford landing on season ending injured reserve. The team replaced them on the 53-man roster with free agent cornerback Justin Rogers and San Francisco 49ers practice squad safety Michael Thomas.
Patterson is tied for the team-high in interceptions with four this season, despite missing seven games this year with a groin injury. He played limited snaps this past week against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He began the year as the starting cornerback opposite Brent Grimes, but has had to hand that role off to Nolan Carroll as the groin injury continued to bother him.
Stanford has played primarily special teams, most often as a gunner on punt coverage. He has also worked as a reserve cornerback, specifically filling in as a fourth corner when Patterson would have to leave games. Stanford left Sunday's game against the Steelers with an injury that was originally listed as a leg injury and he was questionable to return. After the game, it was revealed that Stanford had broken his fibula.
Rogers was originally a seventh round pick of the Buffalo Bills in 2011 out of Richmond. He appeared in 13 games as a rookie, and in all 16 games in 2012 with Buffalo. He then started this season with the Bills, starting five games before being waived and joining the Houston Texans for one game. Rogers has three career interceptions, 12-passes defensed, and 61-tackles. He was waived by the Texans on November 29, signing with the Dolphins today.
Thomas comes off the San Francisco practice squad a month after he was given a pay raise to try to entice him to stay with the club. He was originally signed by the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2012. Thomas' signing was first reported by SB Nation's Niners Nation and covered by The Phinsider last night.
