Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland plans to draft expensive positions

Interesting read to get an overall sense of Ireland's approach to the off-season, 'core positions', draft ranking.

If this is losing, I don't ever want to win!

With the signing of Brent Grimes the Dolphins have now acquired 4 of the Top 85 Free Agents as ranked by NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal. The criteria was: "This is not a list of the 85 players who will make the most money. It's the list of players I'd want, divided into five tiers." Grimes was ranked 13 - the second corner. Wallace was ranked #1, Ellerbe #16 and the top MLB, Keller #20 and the top TE. The only other team with more than one top 20 signing is New England who resigned Volmer and Talib. Lest we forget, this is the same Gregg Rosenthal who branded Miami one of the FA losers in the AFC. The Grimes signing has forced him to re-evaluate the Miami off-season and call it one of the worst ever.

The NFL allows team to bring 30 non-local draft prospects to their headquarters, and the Dolphins are using some of those visits on positions they don’t need, such as Washington State quarterback Jeff Tuel and receiver teammate Marquess Wilson. Wilson quit the team in November, alleging verbal abuse by coach Mike Leach. Dolphins receivers coach Ken O’Keefe met privately with Tennessee receivers Cordarrelle Patterson and Justin Hunter even after Miami signed Mike Wallace and Brandon Gibson. Taking Patterson at 12 would be very surprising considering Miami has needs elsewhere, but this is clear: If a receiver is high on Miami’s board in rounds two through four, Miami could draft him and trade Davone Bess.

"We Got Him!" Miami Dolphins Convince Brent Grimes to Sign a 1-Year Deal

62

This is a great signing by Jeff Ireland, given that the Cleveland Browns reportedly offered Grimes a multi-year deal, and it is believed that the Falcons also wanted to keep Grimes, whom they had franchise-tagged in 2012. Prior to his Achilles injury in 2012, Grimes had a breakout year in 2010, being named to the ProBowl, and he was ranked the 10th best CB in the NFL by ProFootball Focus that year. In 2011, Grimes actually improved enough to be ranked the 3rd best CB. I don’t think this move takes CB off the board in the first round, especially since it's just a 1-year deal, and Grimes is still rehabbing his Achilles. However, it does make our depth chart at CB less of a disaster. There's always the chance he's not fully healthy in 2013, but our risk is minimal given that it's just a 1-year deal, and even while rehabbing, he was the best CB still available in free agency. His deal has $5 million in base money ($2.25 million signing bonus and $750,000 of salary guaranteed), plus $500,000 in per-game roster bonuses. If he doesn't look healthy by the end of pre-season, he can be cut at a $3 million cap hit (not too bad). If we like him, and he plays all 16 games, he earns $5.5 million (less than Sean Smith is getting from the Chiefs). Low-risk, high reward.

Careful, it might be a trap. Clearly half the writers there don't read the other half's stuff.

Lance Louis OG Highlights

I had no idea who this guy was before these highlights. A few things I see ...He is a big ugly, and he looks a little sloppy, but he has a lot of quickness which you can not teach. He is also aggressive and it seems is always looking for someone to hit. Great depth signing.. and who knows .. he could be starting by the end of training camp.... Omar posted this first.
