Phinsider Radio show notes for July 8, 2021.

“If you want something done right, do it yourself” — The Jaelan Phillips chapter of the Phinsider Radio book club.

Received first D-I offer as a sophomore — finished year with 27 scholarship offers.

  • Was third in 2017 Espn top 300, Isaiah Wilson was second, which goes to show that these things are great for context, but not nearly a bible.

Five tackles and 1.5 sacks in his first college game against Texas A&M.

  • Suffered a high ankle sprain, sprain on other ankle, concussion ended his rookie season.
  • 21 tackles and 3.5 sacks in six games over his freshman year.

Involved in a scooter accident before the sophomore season, the car drifted into the bike lane. Needed wrist surgery and a second concussion.

  • In the fourth game of the season, he got his third recorded concussion.
  • Schools forced their players to medically retire after suffering three concussions.

Enrolled at Miami: Gregory Rousseau was on the team, Phillips accepted a role in “sixth-man headspace.”

  • Rousseau opted out in 2020, giving Phillips a shot
  • The team made him believe in himself, he spoke in front of the team before Florida state 52-10 game.
  • Eight sacks in 10 games. PLAYED FULL SEASON.
  • Became the top-edge prospect in the draft, the biggest concern is injuries.

Jaelan Phillips can play inside, outside and all around.

  • The combo of length and strength makes it easier — or just possible — to tackle scrambling quarterbacks.
  • The balance of height and mobility is really impressive, can stay balanced when having to adjust to sweeps coming back the other way.
  • You know when you’re watching Pop Warner football or Babe Ruth baseball and you just see the one kid who is taller than everyone else? Basically, looks like a created character in Madden just looking bigger than everyone? That is Phillips in college
  • Burst, bend, length, and strength.
  • Do the Dolphins have the linebackers to play behind that type of aggression? A miss means the running back gets room to the outside. Fast guys like Javon Holland and Brandon Jones come into the picture here.
