Miami Dolphins agree to terms with Jaelan Phillips

Miami now has both of their 2021 first-round picks locked up before the start of training camp

After another year of Chris Grier hoarding draft picks, we knew it would take some time before the Miami Dolphins' entire 2021 draft class was under contract. Last month, Jaylen Waddle agreed to terms with the team. And now, as we learned a short time ago, a fellow first-round pick and pass-rush extraordinaire Jaelan Phillips has agreed to terms with the team.

Here is the official press release from the Miami Dolphins.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins today announced that they have signed linebacker Jaelan Phillips. He was selected in the first round (18th overall) by Miami in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Phillips started 10 games for the University of Miami in the 2021 season, totaling 45 tackles (21 solo), eight sacks, one interception and four passes defensed. He earned first-team All-American and second-team All-ACC honors as a junior in 2020. Phillips also played two seasons (2017-18) at UCLA before transferring to Miami.

If you want to learn more about rookie first-round pick, Jaelan Phillips, check out this film breakdown I did earlier in the offseason. Here’s a snippet from that article:

I don’t know if Jaelan Phillips will start on day one. After all, Brian Flores is a firm believer in competition and some of the veterans could hold the inside track. Then again, if the plan is to play the eleven best guys, it’s hard to imagine there are many players on the defensive line more talented than Jaelan Phillips. And I only assume both Brian Flores and Chris Grier were #stoked that Phillips was still available.

In the end, the Dolphins got the most talented pass-rusher in the nation (IMO). His last four games were as impressive as any and should have fans excited for what type of player he can become. Pair that alongside a pretty damn good coaching staff—and I believe the sky is truly the limit for Jaelan Phillips and the Miami Dolphins defense.

How do you feel about Jaelan Phillips? Do you think he has the potential to be the best prospect from Miami’s 2021 draft class? Is he the early favorite for Defensive Rookie of the Year? Could he be the next Dion Jordan? Let us know in the comments section below!
