Dolphins release veteran safety Bobby McCain

The move saves the Dolphins $5.65M in cap space

We knew when the Miami Dolphins drafted Oregon safety Jevon Holland in the second round. The plan for the future was to eventually move on from one (or both) of Miami’s veteran safeties.

Free-agent safety Malik Hooker then came in for a visit, making it seem even more likely the team had plans to further revamp their secondary before the start of the 2021 NFL season. A domino was sure to fall.

The first of those dominos fell minutes ago when the Miami Dolphins informed Bobby McCain they would be going their separate ways.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Miami Dolphins plan to move on from team captain and starting safety Bobby McCain.

The Miami Dolphins drafted Bobby McCain in the 5th-round (#145) of the 2015 NFL Draft. He played in 87 games with the Dolphins, recording over 240 tackles (186 solo), 4 sacks, 30 pass breakups, and 7 interceptions. He was a team captain and an important voice in Miami’s secondary.

Releasing Bobby McCain saves the Miami Dolphins $5.66-million, according to Spotrac.

It will now be interesting to see if Brian Flores and his staff plan to use Jevon Holland to fill McCain’s void or if they will continue to scour the free agent/trade market. Ideally, the Dolphins will sign a veteran like Malik Hooker, allowing Holland to start at nickel.

Whatever the plan, I trust Josh Boyer and Coach Flores to get things right.
