The 2021 NFL draft kicked off last night with our Miami Dolphins making two selections. With the sixth overall pick, the Dolphins selected Alabama speedster and wideout Jaylen Waddle. Miami followed their first selection of the night with their eighteenth overall pick, selecting defensive end Jaelan Phillips from the University of Miami or as most of us know it as just the U! The reaction to the two picks from the fans was mixed with some thrilled with both picks, some disappointed with both picks, and some mixed one way or the other between the two picks.

Much of the concern on the part of the fans seems to be the injury history of both players or that reaching for what is essentially a slot receiver with the sixth overall pick, no matter his world-class speed, is just too high for the position, especially given some of the other talent that was still available at that point in the draft. Phillips would most likely be a no-brainer given his ability and amazing athleticism had he not at one point had to walk away from football due to concussion concerns. This makes Phillips the ultimate boom or bust pick all based on his future health and ability to stay healthy.

Tonight’s broadcast kicks off an hour earlier at 7:00 PM EST. The Dolphins, at the time, that this was written, hold the fourth pick in the second (36th overall) and the eighteenth pick in the second round (50th overall). In the third round, the Dolphins hold the eighteen pick (82 overall) but will be picking in the seventeenth spot (81st overall) due to the New England Patriots being forced to forfeit their pick in the third round that would have been the 13th pick in the round (77th overall).
