Dolphins sign Maurice Smith; Chase Allen to IR

NFL: Miami Dolphins at Buffalo Bills Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Dolphins have announced two roster moves on Wednesday. The team placed linebacker Chase Allen on injured reserve as he continues to deal with a foot injury that does not appear to be progressing. The Dolphins are hopeful that Allen will be able to return this year. He has appeared in five games, including one start, for Miami this season.

Replacing Allen on the roster is safety Maurice Smith, who was released by the team on Monday to make roster space for tackle Sam Young to be re-signed to the team. Smith originally made the team’s 53-man roster on September 1, but was released on September 3, when the Dolphins re-signed Young, who had been released the previous day when the team was awarded center Travis Swanson off waivers. Thus, this is the second time this season the Dolphins have released Young, then re-signed him a couple of days later and released Smith. Smith joined the Dolphins practice squad when it happened to him earlier in the season, now he comes straight back to the 53-man roster.

Smith has played in four games this season, recording three tackles and a pass defensed.

The Dolphins kickoff at 1pm ET on Sunday in a home game against the Detroit Lions.
