Offensive Game Plan vs Chicago Bears: Time for a Change

After 5 weeks of football, all of us are feeling uncomfortable about our team. Injuries have derailed a good off season of player acquisition and it's clear that we do not have enough talent to make up for the loss of these key players. However, how many of us at the start of the season would be happy with a record of 3-2 after 5 weeks. Many of us would be happy. It's all about perspective.

The biggest surprise of the season so far has been the defense. We have lost a lot of talent but last week proved that we have a top 15 defense. I don't care what the total points allowed say because almost 20% of those points came off of special teams/turnovers in the 1st 5 games. The key to our defense going forward is the health of Reshad Jones. Jones is the glue that holds the secondary together. In the Oakland as well as the New England Games, miscommunication led to easy pitch and catches. In addition, our line backing corps is really starting to gel. Alonso is back to his 2016 performance and both Baker and Mc Millan are getting better each week.

This week we face the DPOY so far in Khalil Mack. Tunsil is still a question mark at the time of this writing since he is still in concussion protocol. Mack lines up on the right side of the line and that will be Ju'wuan James responsibility. However, Vic Fangio, the DC, has another weapon on the outside by the name of Leonard Floyd. The man in the middle that causes havoc on the DL for the Bears is Akiem Hicks. He has to be double teamed. Therefore, the Dolphins will have to come out in a different sets from the previous games.

On 1st and 2nd downs, I would like to see us in 23 personnel. Meaning 2 RB's and 3 TE's. The best way to stop a pass rush is to attack them by running the ball. Pass rushers do not enjoy having to stop the run constantly. Fortunately, we have 3 RB's that we can rotate in and provide a combination of speed and power. It's time to play 1970's football. Both Ballage and Drake can be lined up in both the backfield or as a WR. Gesicki would be lined up in the Y and both O'Leary and Smythe would be our inline blockers. All 3 of our TE's can catch the ball.

This strategy would totally confound the Bears who would be preparing for our 21 or 11 personnel packages. We are ranked near the bottom in several offensive categories including Time of Possession 26.40 minutes/game, 30th in Total Yards, 31% in 3rd down conversions, and Ryan Tannehill has already fumbled the ball 4 times in 5 games. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over again and expecting a different result.

In the Cincinnati Game, Gase failed in protecting Ryan Tannehill when he left Sam Young at LT without any help from our TE's. Young is a good RT and a horrible LT. Tannehill has proven that he has no pocket presence. Tannehill's best attribute is that he throws a beautiful spiral downfield and he can run. His best games occur when he is used as a runner in a RPO. Do not leave him in the pocket on every passing play. Utilize his athleticism.

This game is going to be low scoring. Both defenses are solid. Chad Pennington CP10 gave RT17 the best advice when he told him that more games are lost than our won in the NFL. Last week proved that against the Bengals. The team who makes the least mistakes will win this Sunday.
