Anthony Steen to start at left guard, Gabe Wright added to practice squad

The Dolphins have made countless attempts to reshuffle their offensive line during the offseason, particularly at the left guard position. Now, after sustaining multiple injuries and trying numerous combinations, the coaching staff has come to the decision that 27-year old Anthony Steen will make the start when Miami opens the season against Tampa Bay this week, as reported by Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald.

Steen played 15 games for the Dolphins last season, making seven starts. He’s shown versatility by playing both center and guard, but the latter position is where he will hold down the fort for the time being. Over the offseason, he’s competed with Ted Larsen, who now finds himself on injured reserve, Kraig Urbik, who the team released with an injury settlement last week, and Jesse Davis, who will provide depth along the line of the time being.

If Steen doesn’t preform up to the coaching staff’s standards, he could find himself losing his job to the younger Davis. The Dolphins could also decide to bring in outside help at some point, as Phinsider writer Steve Dewald noted earlier today.

The Dolphins also continued to round out their practice squad today, as the team signed former Lions, Browns, and Eagles defensive tackle Gabe Wright. Wright was drafted by the Lions in 2015 and played in seven games. He was released and signed by the Browns in 2016, moving back and forth from the practice squad and the active roster. This offseason, Wright spent time with the Eagles before being waived on September 1st during roster cut downs.
