Adam Gase said that Jermon Bushrod was the 2nd highest rated OL on the Miami Dolphins last year. Pro Football Focus ranked him as the 69th guard out of 73 qualifying players. Needless to say, I was curious to dig into this tape.
To be honest, I went in search of bad tape. I figured, let’s look at the 1st half of the Los Angeles Rams game: 0 points, and a nasty defensive line. How did Bushrod hold up?
Offensive guard is probably the loudest echo of a weakness that we have on offense, so let’s see what we have in this veteran, who has started every single game in the past 7 years (sans 2015).

Game Tape - #74
Went straight for 1st half of LA game: we scored 0 points. Wondered what the film would reveal about @j_bushrod7475. Answers might surprise. pic.twitter.com/5leOcYM3zz— SuttonTheSoccerDad (@Suttonlacesout) July 18, 2017
One of the few opportunities I saw Bushrod 1-on-1 with Aaron Donald, but I didn’t notice any problems on the stunt.
Working against Domonique Easley here. James' hesitation getting to the edge sets up the pressure, Bushrod does his part IMO. pic.twitter.com/OdwfpsIWlQ— SuttonTheSoccerDad (@Suttonlacesout) July 18, 2017
Tough play to judge. Steen drifts Donald's way, naturally. IMO Bushrod makes a smart play here. Minimal gain but solid blitz pickup by #74. pic.twitter.com/siSg6SGbmB— SuttonTheSoccerDad (@Suttonlacesout) July 18, 2017
Sack comes from blind side. Bushrod has a textbook stunt transfer as far as I can tell. pic.twitter.com/Z0B5GgeZ7K— SuttonTheSoccerDad (@Suttonlacesout) July 18, 2017
1-on-1 with Easley again. Shows good balance/strength. Wanted to see more 1-on-1 with Aaron Donald, but that didn't happen much in 1st half. pic.twitter.com/n5njeiivvO— SuttonTheSoccerDad (@Suttonlacesout) July 18, 2017
Interesting side note: I put up a poll and of course had an option to signify that I suck, but the response by Joe Daddona was retweeted by Jermon Bushrod himself:
I'm gonna dig into Bushrod tape @j_bushrod7475 ...what will I find: Adam Gase was right (#2 ranked OL on Fins) or PFF (69th out of 73 G)— SuttonTheSoccerDad (@Suttonlacesout) July 18, 2017
Since Gase knows what he's supposed to do on every play and we re-signed him I'll go with Gase!— Joe Daddona (@Joe_Daddona) July 18, 2017
Bushrod would respond to another comment, too:
Being #2 on last year's line makes you wildly mediocre among your peer group but PFF grades trench play terrible imo— The Dirty LEFT (@DanG239) July 18, 2017
That's ok. It's your opinion. I still have an opportunity to play going into my 11th year ♂️ https://t.co/sSUztlUkqU— Jermon Bushrod (@j_bushrod7475) July 18, 2017
Why He Might Succeed
He’s a veteran and an Adam Gase favorite.
Why He Might Not
In my opinion, the only way Jermon Bushrod is not starting is because of injury.
Odds of Making Roster
99.9%. He’ll be expected to man the right guard spot and let the competition of Kraig Urbik, Ted Larsen, and Isaac Asiata sort out the left guard spot.
