The Miami Dolphins started the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft with three picks, then made a trade up with the Philadelphia Eagles to select Utah guard Isaac Asiata with the 164th overall pick. That trade caused the Dolphins to lose their 184th overall pick, but they kept the 178th overall pick, plus added a pick in the sixth round. The team has now used that 178th overall pick to add LSU defensive tackle Davon Godchaux.
NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein writes of Godchaux:
Undersized three-technique who played with the punch and arm extension to set a strong edge even though he might be a better fit for a one-gap unit. Options could be limited as he lacks the mass to hold up against double teams, and he might be missing the traits to create quick wins as a pass rusher. He projects as a 4-3 rotational tackle with very little sub-package value.
Mike Mayock on NFL Network described Godchaux as a player whose best football is in front of him.
The Dolphins have systematically attacked their needs while getting the best player available each time they have made a pick. The team was the last franchise in the league to make a selection on offense, having used their first three picks on defensive upgrades.
