Dolphins promote Jordan Lucas, place Eric Smith on IR

The Miami Dolphins made a roster move on Tuesday, bringing cornerback Jordan Lucas up to the active roster from the practice squad. They made roster space by placing rookie tackle Eric Smith on injured reserve, effectively ending his season. Lucas played in eight games for the Dolphins last year, all as a special teams member. He is converting from safety to cornerback this season

The Dolphins make the move as they look to add depth at the cornerback position; Byron Maxwell missed last week’s game after sustaining an injury in pre-game warm-ups.

Smith made the roster as an undrafted free agent after a strong training camp and preseason. He was expected to provide depth at the tackle position this year, but an ailing knee has made him inactive for each of the team’s first three games. He likely will require surgery to clean up the issue.

The Dolphins will face the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, the first game in Hard Rock Stadium this season.
