Well it's official. Matt Burke is now the Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator. It was reported last week that if Vance Joseph left the Dolphins, there was a plan to promote Burke instead of looking around the league for a new one. Adam Gase preached yesterday about continuity and this is a continuity move.
This was Burke's first season with the Dolphins. The linebackers weren't that great, besides Kiko Alonso, but the unit struggled all season with injuries. Burke is going to face a tough task of improving this Dolphins defense which finished 29th in the league in total defense.
Burke has been a linebackers coach for eight years. He has had stays in Cincinnati (2014-15) and Detroit (2009-13) and served under Jim Schwartz in Detroit. Could Burke implement a defense that is simila tor a Schwartz defense? Burke also has coaching experience at Harvard (2003), Boston College (2002-03) and Bridgton Academy (1998-99). He was also an administrative assistant (2004-05) and defensive assistant/quality control coach (2006-08) in Tennessee.
