The Miami Dolphins traded defensive end Chris McCain to the New Orleans Saints earlier this week in a move that cold have earned the team a seventh-round draft choice. The Saints, however, have released McCain as a part of their 53-man roster reduction. That draft pick compensation will no longer be sent to the Dolphins.
The Dolphins likely would have released McCain during today’s roster cuts, so in the end, it does not make any difference for Miami. The team took a chance on getting some compensation in return for McCain, but it did not work for them.
Miami could still look to add McCain to their practice squad, using one of their two-year player exemptions. McCain has shown flashes early in the preseason the last couple of years, but he then seems to disappear as the preseason continues. Potentially, he could use more time to develop, which a move to the practice squad could accomplish. Would the Dolphins look to bring back McCain, after having just traded him away?
