Dolphins to hold moment of silence for Jose Fernandez

Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was killed in a boating accident in Florida, the US Coast Guard announced on Sunday. The 24-year-old ace was among the three people who perished when their 30-foot boat crashed into rocks off the coast of Miami Beach. Police were called to the scene around 3am, with Fernandez and the other two individual found deceased at the scene.

The Marlins game against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday was cancelled after the news of his passing. Fernandez was scheduled to pitch on Monday.

"The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of José Fernández. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time," a statement from the Marlins said after receiving the news.

The Miami Dolphins, who will kickoff at 1pm ET Sunday against the Cleveland Browns, have announced that they will hold a moment of silence prior to kickoff in honor of Fernandez.
