Monday Night Football: Los Angeles Rams @ San Francisco 49ers Live Thread

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

As has become customary in recent years, the NFL and Monday Night Football feature a double-header on kickoff weekend. The second game in tonight's lineup features two NFC West divisional rivals. The Los Angeles Rams will travel up the road to take on the San Francisco 49ers. Tonight also marks the first time that the Ram's will play as the Los Angeles Rams since moving to St. Louis twenty-two seasons ago.

The Rams enter the 2016 season coming off of a disappointing sub .500 season at 7 and 9, including a loss to the 49ers to close out their season. The 49ers, on the other side of the ball fared even worse at 5 and 11, a record that saw first-year head coach Jim Tomsula lose his job after only a single season. Tonight will mark the first game for the 49ers under head coach Chip Kelly who now overseas the team following a three-year stint as the Eagles head coach after previously leaving the University of Oregon for the NFL.

The two teams have one of the longest running rivalries in the NFL. The series dates to 1950 and has seen them face off at least twice every season since. The two teams have previously faced off 133 times in a series that gives the 49ers a slight edge at 66-64 and 3 ties. Last years series resulted in an even split but it's a rivalry that should heat back up now that both franchises once again reside in the same state assuming that they can both find a little of their former glory on the field.
