Miami Dolphins Trade Edge Rusher Chris McCain

The Miami Dolphins make a roster move today by trading edge rusher Chris McCain to the New Orleans Saints.

Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports

A bit of surprising news today as the Miami Dolphins are working on a deal to trade third year edge rusher to the New Orleans Saints.  The details of the deal have not been reported, but it would seem as if the Dolphins will get a late round pick as compensation.

Chris McCain began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent and worked his way onto the roster even with Cameron Wake, Olivier Vernon, and high draft pick Dion Jordan.  In his first NFL, he blocked a punt that led to a touchdown, and earned his first sack against Tom Brady.  He totaled 2 career sacks in limited action.

He was buried on the defensive end depth chart, but had shown flashes of edge rushing ability.  However, the coaches recently said that McCain needed to work on his edge setting int he run game.  McCain is an outspoken player on twitter, but is a fan favorite.  Thanks in part to a cool pre-game ritual of finding a child in the stands and letting the kid walk around the field with him.

Assuming the Dolphins do not acquire a player in the deal, that leaves them at 77 currently on the roster, with the team needing to trim to 75 by 4 pm tomorrow.

*UPDATE* - Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald just reported he was told that the draft pick obtained from New Orleans is a conditional 7th round pick.
