The Miami Dolphins announced Wednesday the signing of cornerback Xavien Howard, the team's second-round pick. Howard becomes the fifth member of the Miami draft class, joining first-round pick Laremy Tunsil, sixth-round picks wide receiver Jakeem Grant and cornerback Jordan Lucas, and seventh round-pick quarterback Brandon Doughty. The team has three players from the 2016 Draft still to sign.

Howard played three years at Baylor after sitting out his first season as a redshirt. He spent the 2013 season as a reserve cornerback and special teams contributor before moving into the starting lineup in 2014. He started 26 games over his last two seasons. He recorded 10 interceptions, 33 pass breakups, 1.5 sacks, and 98 tackles while at Baylor.

The Dolphins selected Howard with the expectation that he will be able to establish himself as a starter on the team's defense in his rookie season. He joins a position group with Byron Maxwell, Bobby McCain, Tony Lippett, Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, Chimdi Chekwa, Tyler Patmon, and Lafayette Pitts, along with Lucas.

Miami still needs to sign both of the team's third-round picks, running back Kenyan Drake and wide receiver Leonte Carroo, as well as seventh-round pick, tight end Thomas Duarte. Drake and Carroo have both signed injury waivers with the team, allowing them to take part in the club's offseason training program. Duarte cannot take part in any NFL events - other than the rookie minicamp the team held earlier this month - because his college, UCLA, utilizes the quarters system and NFL rules do not a allow a player to join his team until the academic term in which he was enrolled at the time of the draft is completed.

The team had the same thing happen with 2013 third overall pick Dion Jordan, who could not report to the team for rehab work on an injured shoulder until Oregon's academic calendar was completed due to the quarters system. UCLA's Spring 2016 quarter ends on June 10.
