2016 NFL Mock Draft: Phinsider community projection surprises with 2nd overall pick from Browns

With the second overall pick in the Phinsider Community Mock Draft, the Cleveland Browns select...

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The second selection in our Phinsider Community Mock Draft is here, with the Cleveland Browns taking the center stage. Playing the role of general manager for the Browns is xkar25, who could be in the mood to surprise some with this pick.

The Browns signed former Washington Redskins second-overall pick Robert Griffin III to a two-year, $15 million contract this year in free agency. Reports indicated that the signing would not prevent the Browns from selecting a quarterback in the Draft, but xkar25 thinks it may mean the Browns are not looking quarterback in the first-round of the Draft.

With the second-overall pick, xkar25 selects for the Cleveland Browns, DeForest Buckner, defensive end, Oregon.

Most have been mocking a QB to the Browns, but their recent history of not taking a top 10 QB despite desperate need there along with the RGIII signing leaves me to believe they will look elsewhere. A trade back is possible if the Titans stay at 1. I think the pick will come to one of 4 players all on defense. They will look at Jack, Bosa, Ramsey, and Buckner.

Cleveland will look closely at Bosa as the local guy, but might not be the best fit. Bosa is more of a 4-3 DE whereas the Browns appear to be set to run a 3-4 under Horton. Bosa isn't expected to cover well and doesn't profile as a OLB as well as a DE. Jack and Ramsey both could step in and fill a need and would probably be better picks than Buckner. However, I see the Browns taking Buckner. He will help solidify there DL especially in the run defense. He will be a great fit in their 3-4 defense. He he racked up an unbelievable 163 tackles his last 2 years in college, showing great impact on the field. Not only would he help the run defensive but he can get after the passer helping the pass rush

This really is a surprise, with conventional wisdom seeing the Browns select a quarterback - most likely Jared Goff or Carson Wentz - with the pick, but the Browns do seem to always surprise when it comes to their first-round choice. If Cleveland is not in love with one of the top quarterbacks this year, they could elect to go somewhere else in the first round, then pick up a developmental quarterback later in the Draft, and let Griffin run with the offense this season, before selecting a first-round passer in the 2017 Draft.
