The 2016 NFL Draft kicks off this evening at 8PM EST, with it carrying through Saturday evening. This evening will feature the full first round of the draft with rounds 2 and 3 being covered tomorrow evening and rounds 4 through 7 being covered on Saturday afternoon. Leading up to the draft we have already seen three trades within the top ten picks of the first round leading many to suspect the wheeling and dealing between teams is not yet over.
The Philadelphia Eagles have already pulled off two trades while the Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Rams and Tennessee Titans have all also been involved in trades involving draft picks. Miami kicked off the wheeling-dealing when they sent their 8th overall pick to the Eagles back in March in exchange for two players, linebacker Kiko Alonso and cornerback Byron Maxwell. Miami also received the Eagles 13th pick in the first round.
The Eagles then followed up their moves with the Dolphins by pulling off another trade this past week. Philly sent the Dolphins former 8th overall pick, along with their 3rd and 4th rounders in this year's draft plus their first round pick from the 2017 NFL Draft to the Cleveland Browns for the 2nd overall pick in this year's draft. The belief is that the Eagles will now draft North Dakota States former starting quarterback Carson Wentz with the second pick, assuming that it's QB Jared Goff that goes first.
The big trade of the off-season was between the Titans and the Rams. The Rams are assumed to want quarterback Jared Goff from Cal State. In order to make that happen, the Rams sent Tennessee their first-round pick, two second round picks and a third-round pick from this draft as well as their first and third rounder in 2017. In exchange, they received the Titans number one overall pick this draft along with a fourth and sixth rounder.
The two big trades leading up to the draft only further the point that quarterback is without question the most important position in the NFL. Neither of these two quarterbacks is a sure-fire talent and yet teams are still willing to trade the house to assure that they at least get a shot at finding out if one of them are.
