The Atlanta Falcons have signed Derrick Shelby to a four-year deal, with a base value of $18 million, $7.5 million guaranteed, and up to a maximum of $21 million. The Falcons will make Shelby a full time starter opposite Vic Beasly, who was their first round pick last year.
Shelby began his career in Miami as an undrafted free agent out of Utah. Shelby was a key rotational player on the Dolphins defensive line and when Cameron Wake was lost for the year, Shelby took over. Though he didn't record many sacks (3.5) Shelby was great against the run grading out as Pro Football Focus' 10th-ranked 4-3 defensive end. In 2014, Shelby was suspended for the team indefinitely from the team due to poor conduct, but was reinstated a week later.
The Dolphins lost Oliver Vernon and have now lost Derrick Shelby. That's two starters on the defensive line that were lost. Miami has added Mario Williams and Cameron Wake will return after suffering an Achilles injury last season.
