The sixth-annual Dolphins Cancer Challenge - previously named the Dolphins Cycling Challenge - returns this weekend for another round of fundraising to fight cancer. Since 2010, the event, which began as a series of bicycle rides/races and now includes walks, runs, and a golf tournament, has raised over $11.5 million. The 2016 edition of the event, with over 3,000 participants, has raised nearly $3 million alone.
DCC I, in November 2010, consisted of just the bike events, and raised $533,000. DCC V in 2015, the first time the event moved from November to February, set the high mark for money raised at $4.65 million. All of the participant-raised funds go toward cancer research at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.
This weekend will feature six different bike ride lengths, a 100-mile option starting and ending at Sun Life Stadium, a Perfect Season Ride going 72 miles from City Place in West Palm Beach to Sun Life Stadium, a 35-mile ride from the University of Miami to Sun Life Stadium, a 24-mile ride from Esplande Park to Sun Life Stadium, a 46-mile ride from Boca Raton to Sun Life Stadium, and a 13-mile ride from Dolphins Training Camp in Davie to Sun Life Stadium. All of the bike rides will happen on Saturday.
Saturday will also feature a 5k run/walk at Sun Life Stadium and the DCC VI Celebration Concert featuring Melissa Etheridge and Sheryl Crow. The concert is open to the public with tickets (with Ticketmaster fees) totaling $50 (13 and under are free with a parent), plus $10 for parking. Money raised for the concert will also go toward cancer research. The concert will begin at 2pm, with parking opening at 11am.
You can donate to DCC VI by clicking here. If you know someone who is riding in the challenge, you can search for them there. If you are looking for an individual to support, our own Griffin Van Nest (OhioFinFan4Life) is once again riding in the challenge, and you can search for his page if you would like to donate to him.
