There may not be “Pro Bowl” in front of running back when it comes to describing Jay Ajayi - at least not yet, since Ajayi is an alternate for the league’s all-star event - but there sure seem to be a lot of honors that have been coming Ajayi’s way. After being named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week earlier this week, Ajayi has now been named the FedEx Ground Player of the Week.
Ajayi has now earned both of those awards three times this season. The Dolphins running back is also only the fourth player in league history, along with O.J. Simpson, Earl Campbell, and Tiki Barber, to rush for 200 yards in a game three times in one season.
The FedEx Ground and Air awards are weekly recognition to the top performers all across the league. The award is based on fan voting. FedEx donates $2,000 to the USO in the name of the winner of each award. This week’s FedEx Air Player of the week is Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Ajayi ran for 206 yards on 32 carries for a 6.4 yards per attempt average with a touchdown in Week 16 against the Buffalo Bills. He ran for 214 yards against Buffalo in the Week 7 match up between the two division rivals, earning his second FedEx Ground Player of the Week award after that performance.
