Xavien Howard injured in practice, could miss Titans game

Dolphins rookie cornerback Xavien Howard may miss the team’s Week 5 game after a practice injury.

The Miami Dolphins’ plan to keep cornerback Byron Maxwell as a reserve player, rather than giving him back his former starting position, may have hit an obstacle on Tuesday: rookie cornerback Xavien Howard was injured during practice. According to a report from the Miami Herald’s Armando Salguero, Howard got tangled up during the practice and has been under the care of the team doctors, but could need “others” to look at him.

The Dolphins did not give any indication on the availability of Howard for this Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans. Head coach Adam Gase confirmed the injury on Wednesday, but did not state what kind of injury it is. The Dolphins will release their first injury report of the week later Wednesday, which should at least provide a clue as to the body part injured.

If Howard is out of this weekend’s game, Maxwell and second-year cornerback Tony Lippett are the two most likely starters.
