Musician, songwriter and sometimes actor Glenn Frey sadly passed away today at the age of 67.

Frey was, of course, best known as a founding member of the hugely successful 1970's Rock/Americana/Country Rock band the Eagles. Glenn wrote or co-wrote many of the Eagles biggest hit songs. He was a guitarist for the band as well as playing piano and keyboards on many of the bands songs. He also sang  lead vocals on many of the bands biggest hits including "Heartache Tonight", "Take It Easy", "New Kid In Town", "Peaceful Easy Feeling", "Lyin' Eyes", "Tequila Sunrise" and "Already Gone".

Glenn had several hits as a solo artist following the breakup of the Eagles in 1980. One hit in particular, "Smugglers Blues" not only inspired an episode of "Miami Vice". The Song is also infamous for an event that took place in Miami on June 2nd of 1985 when the DJ, Don Cox of WINZ-FM, as a protest of drug use, locked himself in his DJ booth, playing the song 51 consecutive times in a row from 6 AM to after 10 AM. The protest somehow got the attention of Frey who called into the station from Hawaii to inquire as to why his song has been played repeatedly.

Frey won six Grammy Awards as a member of the Eagles to go along with five American Music Awards. The band's record sales have exceeded 120 million copies worldwide. He was also, as a member of the band, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. He has combined, between his time in the Eagles and as a solo artist had 24 top 40 singles on the Billboard charts.

There was a statement on the Eagles official website today noting that Glenn had passed as a result of complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia. Frey had recently been recovering from intestinal surgery. Band mate Don Henley's statement on the loss of his friend can be seen HERE
