The first week of the 2015 NFL regular season came to a close last night the the double-header Monday Night Football. That means it is time for our Phinsider Power Rankings to make their debut for the season. How can I make the headline "jumping over teams" and have a "Last Week" column in our chart, if this is the power rankings debut? I am glad you asked.
The SB Nation Preseason Power Rankings were made up of a vote from all of the SB Nation NFL blogs' managing editors. I simply took my ballot from that vote, and used it as our "last week" section. Basically, we had Phinsider Power Rankings heading into Week 1, we just did not publish them.
Some thoughts on this week's power rankings:
- New England jumps into the second position, in part from their 28-21 win over Pittsburgh, in part because when we did our ballots, Tom Brady was still suspended, which led me to drop New England to sixth. With him back, the team jumps up the rankings.
- I think the rankings were pretty stable for a Week 1 to Week 2 change, where you can usually see some huge jumps and falls. Our biggest jump was a six place leap by St. Louis, but beating Seattle is worth a big jump.
- Several teams lost three spots, including Seattle and Indianapolis, with one of those spots each being the jump for New England, then two spots for their respective losses. Detroit also loses three spots, mostly because they are right in that middle of the pack group where you could really put the teams in any order and it would make sense. Minnesota probably could lose some more spots and it make sense, but I am trying to avoid an overreaction to one week. Jacksonville and Cleveland both also lose three spots, just based on the teams that won and lost around them.
