Geno Smith punched in jaw, out 6-10 weeks

The New York Jets had, well, a New York Jets type of day with the news that quarterback Geno Smith broke his jaw when he was sucker punched in the locker room.

Well, things got New York Jets-like pretty quickly today, with head coach Todd Bowles announcing an injury to quarterback Geno Smith. The injury, a broken jaw which required surgery today, will keep Smith out of action for at least 6-10 weeks.

What caused this injury?

Smith was punched by a teammate in the locker room before Tuesday's practice.

Bowles announced the injury at a hastily called pre-practice meeting with the media. No details of exactly what led to the altercation, but Bowles told the media that some disagreement that could have been talked out by "sixth graders" led to linebacker IK Enemkpali "sucker punching" Smith in the face. Enemkpali was released immediately.

The injury to Smith should elevate Ryan Fitzpatrick to the starting quarterback slot, with rookie Bryce Petty now the second string.

The Miami Dolphins "host" the Jets in London in Week 4, which is 8 weeks from now. Unless Smith is able to quickly recover from the injury, Miami could be facing Fitzpatrick in the first of the two matchups between the clubs this year.
