The Miami Dolphins have added running back Jonas Gray to their practice squad, his agent told Fox Sports today. The Dolphins released Gray on Tuesday, but the running back cleared waivers without a team claiming him, and was free to re-sign with Miami's practice squad. Gray has spent time on both Miami's active roster and practice squad this year, carrying the ball 31 times in the games in which he has been active this season, gaining 122 yards.
Gray's roster position was taken by center Sam Brenner, another player Miami has cut and re-signed several times this year. Brenner was released on Saturday to make space for rookie running back Jay Ajayi, who was activated off the Injured Reserve (Designated for Return) list. Ajayi's debut on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills made coaches believe the Miami running back depth chart no longer needed Gray, with Miami backing up starter Lamar Miller with Ajayi and Damien Williams.
There was speculation that the New England Patriots could make a waiver claim on Gray in order to move him back to the team for which he played last year. The Patriots lost running back Dion Lewis to a torn ACL this week, giving them a need at the position.
Gray initially entered the league as an undrafted free agent, signing with the Dolphins in 2012. He has also spent time in the Baltimore Ravens organization.
