Earlier this month, we asked our readers to rank the 32 starting quarterbacks in the NFL. Today, we go back and take a look at the results from the poll. Who came out as the top quarterback in the league? Who were the nine quarterbacks who did not receive a first place vote?
And, most importantly for us, where did Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill come in on the list?
As was explained in the post with the poll, some of the starters are assumed starters for next year, or best guesses at what a team may do. Will Robert Griffin III be starting for Washington? What's the status of Sam Bradford in St. Louis? E.J. Manuel is the only quarterback in Buffalo at this point.
Looking at the results, which will be completely broken down below, I think we were fairly accurate with out rankings. Aaron Rodgers as the top quarterback in the league makes sense, with nearly 300 votes putting him in the top spot, followed by Peyton Manning (2nd; 60 first place votes), Tom Brady (3rd; 73), Andrew Luck (4th; 8), and Ben Roethlisberger (5th; 3). The top five all are quarterbacks worthy of being in that list - though it would be iteresting to re-visit this list after Manning looked old during Sunday's playoff game.
Tannehill came in 10th in this ranking, which did include 32 votes as the top quarterback in the league. It may have been a little high for him, though it does probably put him in the right group of quarterbacks. His standard deviation was the second highest among the top ten, trailing just Russell Wilson(8th; 6). Tannehill finished behind Philip Rivers (9th; 1), and ahead of Joe Flacco (11th; 2). I probably would have had Flacco ahead of Tannehill, as well as Eli Manning (14th; 2) and maybe Matt Ryan (12th; 0), but anywhere in the 10-14 range seems about right. Again, 10th feels too high to me, but there are not a lot of quarterbacks behind Tannehill in our list that I feel like have to be ahead of Miami's third-year passer.
The bottom five of the league were Johnny Manziel (32nd; 1), Geno Smith (31st; 0), E.J. Manuel (30th; 1), Zach Metteberger (29th; 1), and Josh McCown (28th; 0).
Here is the full breakdown of our results, including the number of first place votes for all of the quarterbacks (Ryan, Cam Newton, Carson Palmer, Alex Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Robert Griffin III, Mark Sanchez, McCown, and Geno Smith were the nine who did not receive a first place vote), the total number of times each quarterback appeared on a ballot; the standard deviation in the responses for each quarterback, the average ranking (mean; which set the order of the list), the median number from all the rankings received for each quarterback (median), and the most commonly received ranking for each (mode).
