Patriots vs Dolphins odds: New England opens as 5 point favorite

The opening line for the New England Patriots at Miami Dolphins contest gives a five point edge to the visitors.

The Miami Dolphins open their 2014 season this Sunday when they host the New England Patriots at 1pm ET at Sun Life Stadium. The Patriots, coming off another season as the AFC East Champions, and a trip to the AFC Championship Game, are obviously coming into this Week 1 match up as the favorites, but by how much?

The early lines, according to SB Nation's Odds page, has New England with a five point edge on Miami. That means, if this game were to be played in a neutral site, the Patriots would be considered a more-than-touchdown favorite to beat Miami. As it stands, the Dolphins get the three-point home field advantage to close the gap down to a little less than two field goals.

Will the Patriots be able to cover the spread by beating the Dolphins by at least six points? Can Miami's new offense put the ball in the endzone enough to keep that from happening? Even so much as to come away with the outright victory?

The over/under for the game is currently sitting between 46-1/2 and 47 points.

Looking at some of the other games around the league, the Philadelphia Eagles host the Jacksonville Jaguars this week, and are currently a 10-1/2 point favorite over the visitors, after opening at 11-1/2 points, the largest spread of the week. The closest game features the Carolina Panthers at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where Carolina opened as a three-point favorite, but the line has moved to Tampa Bay being favored by one-point.
