Jonathan Martin traded to the San Francisco 49ers

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the San Francisco 49ers are trading a conditional draft pick to the Miami Dolphins for OT Jonathan Martin, per league sources.

Though it has not been officially announced, Jonathan Martin's tweet would seem to back up Schefter's report:

UPDATE: The Miami Dolphins have confirmed the trade but have not disclosed the terms of the conditional draft pick or its value.

The conditional pick involved in the trade is probably a late round pick that the Dolphins get if Martin is on the final 53-man roster of the 49ers in 2014 and/or is active for a certain number of games for the 49ers. Given the strength of the 49ers at both offensive tackle spots, with All-Pro Joe Staley at left tackle and former 1st round pick Anthony Davis at right tackle, Martin will have to either settle for backup offensive tackle or for competing for a guard spot.

This trade is a low-risk, decent reward move for the 49ers, whose coach knows Martin well from coaching him at Stanford. Likewise, it allows the Dolphins to move on from the Jon Martin-Richie Incognito saga without having to deal with questions about Martin's ability to play in 2014. Martin's play on the field never improved above mediocre at either offensive tackle spot, and this trade to the 49ers likely represents Martin's best and last chance to salvage his NFL career. Martin reportedly expressed his desire to join a new team via his agent, and this has the makings of a deal that leaves all sides content.

Salary Cap Sidenote: Though Martin is no longer on the Dolphins, he will count $960k against the cap due to his signing bonus. However, if the Dolphins had kept him on the roster until after the start of the 2014 season, he would have counted for his base salary of $825k + his pro-rated signing bonus of $475k, for a total of $1.3 million
