Miami heads in to yet another off-season and again much earlier then any of us are happy with. Of course many of us fans have long since started looking to the 2015 off-season that is now upon us but now we can do it in earnest. What players should stay? Which should go? Who do we draft? Who do we grab off the open market? And of course, which of our own free agents do we make a concerted effort to re-sign?
On defense the Dolphins have a hand full of players about to hit free agency highlighted by Jared Odrick, Jimmy Wilson, Louis Delmas and Jason Trusnik. Miami already has a ton of their cap space tide up in their defense and with little money under the cap at present (we are actually negative but have bout 5 mil with roll over cash) and it could spell the end for players like Dannell Ellerbe, Philip Wheeler and Cortland Finnegan. Two if not three of those are good bets to be gone for cap space alone if not for their poor play.
On the offensive side of the ball the list of free agents is highlighted by Big Play Charles Clay, Knowshon Moreno, Daniel Thomas, Jason Fox, Daryn Cooledge, Matt Moore and Samson Satele. Most of this group had something to offer the team before being dinged up and going out for the year. Satele turned out to be a steal and might make sense on a short term deal for depth. Moreno seemed to really kick start the running game for the first time in a long time in game one but then it seemed fine without him much of the time. Clay still seems to get injured all the time but when healthy boy does he make the flashy plays!
In the end the bottom line for many of these guys is do the Dolphins hold a higher value on one of their own players vs. some team out on the open market looking to fill the same hole with the same type of player? Which players do you re-sign? Which do you let walk because they will simply cost too much? Which players do you hope are gone for good never to don a Dolphins jersey again?
