Add another award to an impressive Miami Dolphins haul so far this year. Last week, Dolphins safety Louis Delmas was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week after a two tackle, one fumble recovery, and an interception returned 81 yards for a touchdown against the Jacksonville Jaguars. A few days later, it was announced Rookie wide receiver Jarvis Landry was recognized as the AFC Special Teams Player of the Monthfor October, a month that saw Landry average 35.6 yards per kick return. Week 1 of the season also saw Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake win the AFC Defensive Player of the Week award after he tallied two sacks, two quarterback hits, three tackles, and two forced fumbles.
Now, you can add an AFC Defensive Player of the Week award for Brent Grimes to the list.
Grimes pulled down two interceptions in the Dolphins' 37-0 win over the San Diego Chargers. The eight-year veteran added three tackles, including one for a loss, in the game. He was also instrumental in the team's 4th-down stop of the Chargers during the game's opening possession. While safety Reshad Jones gets credit for the shoestring tackle, Grimes crashed the opposite end of the line of scrimmage from Jones, and was in position to make the tackle himself, as well as causing Branden Oliver to hesitate just long enough for Jones to make the play.
The award is the first AFC Defensive Player of the Week recognition for Grimes. He was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week in 2010's Week 15 as a member of the Atlanta Falcons.
This marks the first time since 2005 that the Dolphins have won AFC Player of the Week honors in consecutive weeks. that 2005 streak was actually three-in-a-row, as defensive end Jason Taylor won the Defensive honors in Week 12, wide receiver Chris Chambers won for the Offense in Week 13, and linebacker Zach Thomas claimed the Defensive award in Week 14. This was the first back-to-back wins for the Dolphins in the same category since 1992 (linebacker Bryan Cox, Week 4, and safety Louis Oliver (Week 5).
Three Player of the Week awards is the most for the Dolphins in a season since they won four in 2005. They also had three recognitions in 2013, 2012, 2009, and 2008. Wake, defensive end Olivier Vernon, and safety Michael Thomas were all recognized last season.
The Dolphins extend their lead on the rest of the AFC with Grimes' recognition. While Miami has had players recognized as the Defensive Player of the Week for the conference three times, no other AFC team has received the recognition more than once .
