Derrick Shelby suspended by Dolphins following Saturday arrest

The Miami Dolphins have suspended defensive lineman Derrick Shelby after he was arrested at a club early Saturday morning.

Early Saturday morning, Miami Dolphins defensive lineman Derrick Shelby was arrested by the Broward County Sheriff's Office. On Monday morning, the team suspended him. In a statement released by the team, head coach Joe Philbin stated:

"We were disappointed to learn about Derrick's arrest. Everyone in this organization is held to high standards of conduct and professionalism. Based on my conversations with Derrick and the information we have thus far, Derrick will be placed on Indefinite Club Suspension. When we have completed all of the necessary diligence, we will make a final determination on his discipline."

At around 2am Saturday morning, police responded to Off the Hookah nightclub, where Shelby was reportedly causing some disturbance. As more details have emerged, it appears Shelby, who the police described as "appearing intoxicated," was touching females without their permission. The officers who responded to the scene asked Shelby to leave, but he refused and began photographing the officers, according to a report from the Palm Beach Post's Andrew Abramson.

When the police attempted to arrest Shelby, he began pushing away from them and tried to "brace his arms to defeat efforts to put him into custody." The police used a taser on Shelby three times before they were able to be arrested. He was taken to Broward General Hospital prior to the Sheriff's Office.

Shelby was charged with trespassing, stemming from his refusal to leave the club, and resisting arrest without violence. Both charges are misdemeanors.

Shelby has played 127 snaps for the Dolphins this year, serving as the primary defensive end and defensive tackle backup. Without him, the team will now turn to Terrence Fede as the primary backup until Dion Jordan, who is serving a suspension for failed drug tests, returns after the team's Week 7 game.
