The Miami Dolphins are currently conducting interviews to fill their vacant offensive coordinator having brought in Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach Bill Lazor yesterday. The team also announced how they would progress with their search for a new general manager. Miami and former GM Jeff Ireland parted ways earlier this week after six years together.
Yesterday, Dolphins CEO Tom Garfinkel spoke during a luncheon with the Chamber of Commerce, addressing the GM situation and the search for a new personnel executive. "In my conversations with Steve, I think first and foremost (what he'll be looking for) is someone with a lot of experience evaluating talent, a proven track record of evaluating talent and a football person," Garfinkel told the group. "That's going to be the first criteria. Someone with a lot of intellect, a collaborative team player and someone who's creative and open minded."
Garfinkel explained that, while he will be involved in the hiring process for the new GM, the decision will be completely Ross' to make. He stated that the team will release a list of potential candidates in the next couple of days, trying to live up to Ross' promise of more transparency within the organization. The first interviews are expected to begin on Friday.
Garfinkle explained that the ideal candidate does not necessarily have to have been a GM prior to joining the Dolphins. Instead, the team will look for someone who is able to evaluate talent, work with Head Coach Joe Philbin, and will put the organization first.
"I said it in my opening press conference that I'm here to support football operations and all of us in the organization are," Garfinkel concluded. "The first priority is winning football games and sort of honoring the proud tradition of winning by the Miami Dolphins. So certainly the person who's picking the players that go out on the field is a critical hire."
