Vince Wilfork injury reported as Achilles tear, out for year

According to media reports, the New England Patriots have lost defensive tackle Vince Wilfork for the season. The All Pro appears to have torn his Achilles tendon in last night's game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Melina Vastola-USA TODAY Sports

According to reports this morning, New England Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork has torn his Achilles tendon and will be out for the remainder of the season.  Wilfork crumbled to the ground during the Atlanta Falcons' opening drive of the game, actually drawing boos from the fans who believed he was faking the injury to combat that Atlanta hurry up offense.  After limping around on the sideline, however, Wilfork was carted into the locker room.

Obviously, the loss of Wilfork to the Patriots is a huge blow to their defense.  Wilfork is the defensive captain for the team, and the rock in the middle of their defensive line.  The depth behind Wilfork is thin at best, with starterTommy Kelly, and rookies Joe Vellano and Chris Jones, the remaining three defensive tackles.  New England will likely look to bring in a veteran free agent some time this week.

The team also has A.J. Francis on their practice squad.  Francis spent the preseason with the Miami Dolphins.
