In a game every bit as good as the hype leading into it, the Miami Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts took their Week 2 contest into the fourth quarter before the Dolphins defense was able to stop Luck on two possible game winning drives and lock away the 24-20 win.
Miami started the scoring with a 18-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Tannehill to Mike Wallace early in the first quarter after seeing Indianapolis kicker Adam Vinatieri miss a 53-yard field goal attempt. The Colts would connect on a 30-yard field goal, only to see Miami add another touchdown, this time on a 10 yard run from Lamar Miller. Miller's touchdown was set up by a beautiful 67 yard catch and run from Charles Clay.
The second quarter would see two Indianapolis Colts touchdowns, a three yard touchdown pass from Andrew Luck to tight end Coby Fleener, followed by a one yard run from Ahmad Bradshaw. The Dolphins would kick a field goal with two seconds on the clock to tie the score at 17 heading into halftime.
The scoring continued in the second half, with the Colts hitting a 38-yard field goal, then Miami answering with a one yard touchdown run from Charles Clay. That play marked the first ever run for Clay in his three year career.
In the fourth quarter, Luck appeared set to once again lead the Colts to a lead before he was intercepted in the end zone by Brent Grimes. The Dolphins would take 4:16 off the clock, but give the ball back to Luck, who drove the team down to the Miami 28 and faced a 4th and 10. The Dolphins would bring pressure and get to Luck, who would technically throw the ball away, but still turn the ball over to Miami on downs.
The Dolphins offense was once again on point, with the running attack joining last week's passing success. Tannehill finished the game 22-for-34 for 319 yards and 1 touchdown. He had a 107.4 passer rating. Luck was 25-for-43 for 321 yards, with 1 touchdowns and 1 interception, giving him a 79.7 passer rating.
Miller ran 14 times for 69 yards, giving him a 4.9 yards per carry average to go with his one score. Daniel Thomas added 30 yards on eight carries.
On the receiving front, Mike Wallace, who was held to one catch for 15 yards last week, set a regular season career high, and tied his all time career high including playoffs, with nine receptions for 115 yards and a score. Charles Clay added five receptions for 109 yards, and Brian Hartline caught five passes for 68 yards.
On defense, the ridiculous pass rush did not materialize as it did against the Browns last week, but Derrick Shelby did record a sack, while Olivier Vernon and Reshad Jones split another. There were six total quarterback hits. Dannell Ellerbe led the game with 14 tackles, Philip Wheeler added 12 more. Grimes had the one interception.
Tannehill did fumble three times, losing one.
The Dolphins move to 2-0 on the season. They hold their home opener next week against the Atlanta Falcons.
