The Miami Dolphins came from behind to win their final preseason game, beating the New Orleans Saints 24-21 tonight.
With the Miami starters, other than guard John Jerry, all sitting during the game, the Dolphins spent the game evaluating the reserves ahead of Saturday's final roster cuts. Some players looked good, justifying decisions to either see more regular season playing time or make the roster. Some guys did not.
One of the did nots was quarterback Pat Devlin, who struggled throughout the first half and all but one play in the second half.. He was inaccurate with the ball early, including two passes to Michael Egnew in the endzone leading to a Caleb Sturgis field goal and a pass behind tight end Dion Sims leading to a turnover on downs at the Saints one yard line. But, he did connect on a 57-yard touchdown pass to Marvin McNutt late in the fourth quarter to put Miami back in the lead 24-21.
Devlin finished the game 22-for-38 for 259 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He had a 57.9 passer rating. Fourth string quarterback Aaron Corp made a brief appearance, being sacked on his first play and left the game with a shoulder injury.
Sims and Egnew both made cases to see playing time this year. Sims caught a touchdown while Egnew was running routes nicely, and was blocking well throughout the game.
Evan Ridriguez, another player trying to work his way to the good side of the cut line, had an up and down day. He made some special teams tackles, but dropped a pass that Miami general manager Jeff Ireland, who happened to be in the booth at the time, described as "very catcahble." He finished the game without a reception.
On defense, Jason Trusnik and Tristan Okpalaugo both recovered fumbles, and had solid games. Vaughn Martin and Derrick Shelby split a sack, while safety Kelcie McCray seemed to be everywhere, recording four solo tackles and a pass defensed.
Along with the bomb pass from Devlin to McNutt to give the Dolphins the lead, the game was sealed with a DeAndre Presley interceptions inside the Miami redzone. Presley had an up and down day, beating beaten several times, but making some plays in the backfield, and the interception.
Now, the team immediately moves into roster evaluation mode, with the final set of cuts due at 6pm ET on Saturday. Teams have to go from the 75 man rosters they carried to night to the 53-man limit for the regular season.
The Dolphins finished the preseason 2-3.
