The Miami Dolphins and fullback Vonta Leach have been circling around each other over the past few weeks, without any real negotiations taking place. The Dolphins want to sign the free agent, and the three time All Pro wants to sign with the Dolphins. However, nothing substantial has really taken place. A series of tweets from Miami Herald reporter Armando Salguero updated the situation between the two sides:
Nothing going on with FB Vonta Leach negotiations with #Dolphins because, well, there've been no negotiations.

#Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland been on vacation. Talks with Vonta Leach expected to pick up once he gets back in the office.

Coach Joe Philbin wants Vonta Leach. Team wants upgrade on Jovorskie Lane, if possible. Team wants more consistency from FB spot.

Vonta Leach wants 2-3 year deal. He doesn't want a one-yr. deal from #Dolphins. Wants to be part of team's future which he sees as bright.

The speed, or lack thereof, makes sense in this place for both sides. Miami is not sure they want to lock in a 31 -year old fullback for multiple seasons, especially if they plan to keep Jorvorskie Lane and Charles Clay. Leach wants the long term security, and wants the money.
Maybe more importantly, Leach is a nine-year veteran of the NFL, and a three time Pro Bowl/All-Pro. He's probably not looking forward to starting training camp, especially in a year in which the Dolphins open camp early and play an extra preseason game. If he can hold off on making a decision until after camp starts, that may be an added benefit.
