Miami Dolphins Free Agency Potential Targets

New, comments

While the free agency period is slowing down, that does not mean the Miami Dolphins, this year's big spenders, are done with their shopping spree yet. Here's a look at some of the potential targets the Dolphins could have after a week of free agency.

The Miami Dolphins started the NFL's 2013 Free Agency period with a bang, signing players like wide receivers Mike Wallace and Brandon Gibson, linebackers Dannell Ellerbe and Philip Wheeler, and tight end Dustin Keller. Now, as free agency works its way through its second week, the Dolphins still have cap space, and needs, remaining. Here are some of the potential targets for the Dolphins by position:

  • Tackle: The Miami Dolphins saw left tackle Jake Long leave this year, choosing to sign with the St. Louis Rams. The team will likely move right tackle Jonathan Martin to the left side, meaning they need a right tackle to fill out the offensive line. Potential FA Targets: Sebastian Vollmer (New England Patriots), Andre Smith (Cincinnati Bengals), Eric Winston (Kansas City Chiefs); Potential Trade: Branden Albert (Kansas City Chiefs)
  • Cornerback: In a mirror of the tackle position, the Dolphins saw cornerback Sean Smith leave this year, choosing to sign with the other Missouri team, the Kansas City Chiefs. The Dolphins already had a need at cornerback, and the Smith move makes it even more important. The Dolphins could be looking to address the position in both free agency and the draft this year. Potential FA Targets: Chris Gamble (Carolina Panthers - Leaning toward retirement), Brent Grimes (Atlanta Falcons), Captain Munnerlyn (Carolina Panthers), Mike Jenkins (Dallas Cowboys)
  • Defensive End: Depending on how the team feels about the development of second year players Olivier Vernon and Derrick Shelby really determines what they will do to address a pass rusher opposite Cameron Wake. The team likes Jared Odrick, who plays defensive end but is more like a defensive tackle. The draft will probably be the ultimate way the Dolphins address the position, particularly with the youth movement we see in the Miami signings this offseason, but that doesn't mean there aren't worthy targets still out there in free agency. Potential FA Targets: Osi Umenyiora (New York Giants), John Abraham (Atlanta Falcons), Dwight Freeney (Indianapolis Colts)
  • Tight End: The Dolphins added Dustin Keller to be the pass catching tight end the offense has needed for a while. However, losing Anthony Fasano this offseason (to where else but Missouri - Kansas City in this case), does hurt on the blocking side of the house. The Dolphins could trust Charles Clay to develop as a blocker this offseason, and hope that Michael Egnew's MMA classes help him get more physical, but a tight end is still not off the board. Potential FA Targets: Michael Hoomanawanui (New England Patriots), Zach Potter (Jacksonville Jaguars), David Thomas (New Orleans Saints), Will Heller (Detroit Lions)
