It did not take long for something special to happen at the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine. During the first group's 40-yard dash event, Arkansas Pine-Bluff offensive lineman Terron Armstead destroyed it.
Armstead is a 6', 5", 306 pound tackle. His unofficial 40-yard time was an incredible 4.65 second. The official 40-yard times will be posted later today, and could the time for Armstead, but if it holds, this would be the first sub-4.7 second 40-yard dash for an offensive lineman.
Oklahoma lineman Lane Johnson also broke the previous record this year, running an unofficial 4.75. NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock had predicted, prior to Armstead running, that Johnson would break the 4.7 mark. The previous record, according to NFL.com's tracker, was Missouri Southern State's Allen Barbre, who ran a 4.84 in 2007.
[UPDATE 12:50pm ET]: Armstead's official time has been posted as 4.71 seasonds, meaning he just missed that 4.7 barrier, but still set the offensive lineman record. Johnson was second at 4.72 second. Four other linemen joined Armstead and Johnson as sub-5-second runners: Oregon's Kyle Long (4.94), Virginia Tech's Vinston Painter and Arkansas' Alvin Bailey (4.95 for both, and Cal's Brian Schwenke (4.99).
